Guard
As a frontier city is well fortified both within and without, so one should guard oneself, so as not to waste a single moment of wakefulness.
The Mother
The Mother. Collected Works of the Mother.- Volume 3. - Questions and Answers (1929)
One must be very attentive, always on guard, watch all one's emotional movements and vital reactions, never close one's eyes with indulgence to one's own weaknesses, and catch oneself each time one makes a mistake, even a small one.

Be on your guard against anything that suggests to you to keep or cling to any impurity or imperfection, confusion in the mind, attachment in the heart, desire and passion in the prāņa, or disease in the body.

Your mind is driven by passion and to support the passion it gives a twist which prevents you from seeing the truth of things. Guard against the twist, be conscious of the passion. Action perverted by such a twist looks like insincerity. Be always on your guard against this persistent defect.

The Mother. Collected Works of the Mother.- Volume 14. - Words of the Mother
The subconscient is there, the thing goes down, remains there, very comfortably, and the first day you are not on your guard, hop! it surges up again and it can last - I knew people for whom it lasted more than thirty-five years, because they did not resolve even once to do what was necessary.

The Mother. Collected Works of the Mother.- Volume 7. - Questions And Answers (1955)
One comes inevitably into contact with the vital plane and enters into it in the expansion of consciousness which results from an inner opening, but one ought never to put oneself into the hands of these beings and forces or allow oneself to be led by their suggestions and impulsions. This is one of the chief dangers of the spiritual life and to be on one's guard against it is a necessity for the seeker if he wishes to arrive at his goal.

The whole trouble comes from drawing away from the psychic and only the psychic can find the solution to the problems. There is consequently only one remedy: be on your guard, hold fast to the psychic, do not allow anything in your consciousness to slip in between your psychic and yourself, close your ears and your understanding to all other suggestions and rely only on the psychic.

If you are on guard against these things then there is no danger of misuse. If the psychic puts forth psychic discernment along with the love, there is no danger, for the light of psychic discernment at once refuses all mixture or misuse.

Agni... is the guardian of the Truth... and defends it from the powers of darkness; he is its constant illumination burning up even in obscure and besieged states of the mind.
Sri Aurobindo
Sri Aurobindo. Sri Aurobindo Birth Centenary Library in 30 Volumes. - Volume 10. - The secret of Veda
At every moment of the spiritual life until one has got fully into the higher light, one has to be on one's guard and be able to distinguish spiritual truth from pseudo-spiritual imitations of it or substitutes for it set up by the mind and the vital desire.

Put the Mother's notice henceforth at the door of your vital being, "No falsehood hereafter shall ever enter here", and station a sentry there to see that it is put into execution.
