The Mother’s birthday (21 February 1878)
Aroume. Exhibition of Chinese Paintings
On March 26 1955, the Mother visits the first exhibition of Chinese Paintings above the Dining Room (the upper hall of “Aroume”) by two Chinese artists. Another exhibition of 210 paintings and calligraphies was held on the auspicious day of 4-5-67 by one of them who has settled here. Golconde. Japanese Exhibition
This exhibition consisted almost wholly of articles from Japan which Mother had herself used there and brought with her in 1920. The arrangement of the exhibition was in four separate rooms. The first showing the country; the second “Art and Culture”; the third the comparison between the old (1915) and the new (1955); and the fourth “Home Life”. In setting the exhibition with recent Japanese members who were in attendance each day in their national costume. They had, in addition, prepared a Japanese garden in the Golconde grounds and a number of Bonzai or dwarf trees which is so typical of Japanese horticultural art. It was a very successful exhibition and attracted many visitors not only from the Ashram but from the town as well. (From the Bulletin.)
