(10.05.1888, Kladno – 21.11.1976 Langhorne, Pennsylvania) Czech-American architect, the designer of Golconde. He had worked in Japan and U.S.A., and had collaborated with the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. A friend of Pavitra’s, whom he had met in Japan. Pavitra asked him if he would like to design a dormitory for ashram members. Raymond agreed, and brought in two of his colleagues, František Sammer, a Czech architect who had studied with Le Corbusier, and George Nakashima, an American architect and furniture designer. They worked at a projecting and building of “Golconda” at Pondicherry during 1937-1947.
Sri Aurobindo told this story: He doesn’t seem to be very practical. Somewhere he built a hotel which was not very comfortable to live in. The owner complained to him that it was not comfortable. And Raymond replied, “Comfortable? Comfortable? An architect is not concerned with comfort. He is concerned with beauty.”
