(c. 63-12 BÑ), powerful deputy of Augustus, the first Roman emperor. Of low birth, he had become the companion of Octavian (later Augustus), the adoptive son of Julius Caesar, by the time Caesar was murdered in 44 BC. In the ensuing struggle for power, Agrippa was one of Augustus’ key commanders. He suppressed rebellions, founded colonies, and administered various parts of the empire. He helped Augustus to defeat Antony at Actium in 31 BC.
