(1871-1940), popularly known in India as Dinabandhu (friend of the poor). Once professor at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, he was notable not only as an educationist but also as a social reformer. He was an associate of Tagore, and accompanied the poet to Japan, etc. An Englishman by birth, he was a devout Christian and a friend of India, who made this country his adopted home.
