(1838-1923), English historian, biographer as well as politician; Liberal member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (1883-1908); Secretary of State for India (1905-10); created Viscount in 1908. During his career in the House of Commons, Morley came to be called Honest John. Sri Aurobindo refers to him in this way, and also as Archangel John, but he does so ironically. “John Morley was a man of strong opinions tenaciously held and ferociously expressed. He saw himself, and not the Viceroy, as the real ruler of India” (Gilbert).
