the third and last major emperor (273-232 BC) of the Maurya dynasty of Magadha founded by Chandragupta Maurya. His dominion extended from the Hindukush in the northwest to Bengal in the east and from the foothills of the Himalayas to the river Pennar in the south. After his sanguinary conquest of Kalinga he became a changed man. He was converted to Buddhism, and he spread Buddhism far and wide, thus turning it into a world religion.
