(63 BC-AD 14), the first Caesar (Roman Emperor), a grandson of the sister of Julius Caesar. Named at first Gaius Octavius, he became, on adoption by the Julian gens (44 BC) , Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Octavian); Augustus was a title of honour granted by the senate in 27 BC. He was one of the great administrative geniuses of history. Perhaps his greatest achievement was the establishment of “Pax Romana” (Roman peace), a period of world peace, which may have made possible the civilisation of the Roman Empire.
