(1700-1740), the second Peshwa or chief minister of the Maratha state of western India from 1720 to 1740, appointed to the office in succession to his father Balaji Vishwanath. He was a great statesman and an able general; he thought of establishing a Hindu empire in place of the Muslim Moghul empire.
