(1837-1925), a celebrated Sanskrit scholar, teacher, researcher and author, and a social reformer besides. He was a pioneer in applying Western methods to the study of Sanskrit and Indian antiquities, and his works present a happy combination of the Orient and the Occident. He was knighted in 1911.
