Kalidasa

Kalidasa's Characters
III. Minor Characters [3]

Kalidasa, like Shakespeare, seems to have realised the instinct of paternal tenderness1 far more strongly than the maternal; his works both dramatic and epic give us many powerful and emotional expressions of the love of father and child to which there are few corresponding outbursts of maternal feeling. Valmiki’s2 Cowshalya has no parallel in Kalidasa. Yet he expresses the true sentiment of motherhood with sweetness and truth if not with passion.
