Viśvamanas Vaiyaśva

Sukta 23

8.23.1

ईळि॑ष्वा॒ हि प्र॑ती॒व्यं१่ यज॑स्व जा॒तवे॑दसं ।

च॒रि॒ष्णुधू॑म॒मगृ॑भीतशोचिषं ॥

ī́ḷiṣva hí pratīvyám yájasva jātá-vedasam ǀ

cariṣṇú-dhūmam ágṛbhīta-śociṣam ǁ

Pray the Fire as he fronts you, worship with sacrifice the knower of all things born, Fire with his driving smoke and his unseizable light, —

8.23.2

दा॒मानं॑ विश्वचर्षणे॒ऽग्निं वि॑श्वमनो गि॒रा ।

उ॒त स्तु॑षे॒ विष्प॑र्धसो॒ रथा॑नां ॥

dāmā́nam viśva-carṣaṇe agním viśva-manaḥ girā́ ǀ

utá stuṣe ví-spardhasaḥ ráthānām ǁ

fire who is like the string of speeding chariots to a competitor in the race; O all-seeing universal mind, laud him with the word.

8.23.3

येषा॑माबा॒ध ऋ॒ग्मिय॑ इ॒षः पृ॒क्षश्च॑ नि॒ग्रभे॑ ।

उ॒प॒विदा॒ वह्नि॑र्विंदते॒ वसु॑ ॥

yéṣām ā-bādháḥ ṛgmíyaḥ iṣáḥ pṛkṣáḥ ca ni-grábhe ǀ

upa-vídā váhniḥ vindate vásu ǁ

Those on whom he presses, possessor of the word of illumination and seizes on their impulsions and their satisfactions, by their approach to knowledge the Fire finds the Treasure.

8.23.4

उद॑स्य शो॒चिर॑स्थाद्दीदि॒युषो॒ व्य१่जरं॑ ।

तपु॑र्जंभस्य सु॒द्युतो॑ गण॒श्रियः॑ ॥

út asya śocíḥ asthāt dīdiyúṣaḥ ví ajáram ǀ

tápuḥ-jambhasya su-dyútaḥ gaṇa-śríyaḥ ǁ

Up stands his ageless light as he flames out with his burning tusks, in his beautiful splendour, in the glory of his companies.

8.23.5

उदु॑ तिष्ठ स्वध्वर॒ स्तवा॑नो दे॒व्या कृ॒पा ।

अ॒भि॒ख्या भा॒सा बृ॑ह॒ता शु॑शु॒क्वनिः॑ ॥

út ūṃ␣íti tiṣṭha su-adhvara stávānaḥ devyā́ kṛpā́ ǀ

abhi-khyā́ bhāsā́ bṛhatā́ śuśukvániḥ ǁ

Even so, stand up as they laud thee, O doer of the pilgrim-rite, shining out with thy divine light, with thy vast all-regarding lustre.

8.23.6

अग्ने॑ या॒हि सु॑श॒स्तिभि॑र्ह॒व्या जुह्वा॑न आनु॒षक् ।

यथा॑ दू॒तो ब॒भूथ॑ हव्य॒वाह॑नः ॥

ágne yāhí suśastí-bhiḥ havyā́ júhvānaḥ ānuṣák ǀ

yáthā dūtáḥ babhū́tha havya-vā́hanaḥ ǁ

Go, O Fire, with perfect utterances of the word offering uninterruptedly the oblations, since thou hast become the messenger and the carrier of the offerings.

8.23.7

अ॒ग्निं वः॑ पू॒र्व्यं हु॑वे॒ होता॑रं चर्षणी॒नां ।

तम॒या वा॒चा गृ॑णे॒ तमु॑ वः स्तुषे ॥

agním vaḥ pūrvyám huve hótāram carṣaṇīnā́m ǀ

tám ayā́ vācā́ gṛṇe tám ūṃ␣íti vaḥ stuṣe ǁ

I call for you the ancient Fire, the Priest of the call of seeing men; him with this word I declare, him for you I laud.

8.23.8

य॒ज्ञेभि॒रद्भु॑तक्रतुं॒ यं कृ॒पा सू॒दयं॑त॒ इत् ।

मि॒त्रं न जने॒ सुधि॑तमृ॒ताव॑नि ॥

yajñébhiḥ ádbhuta-kratum yám kṛpā́ sūdáyante ít ǀ

mitrám ná jáne sú-dhitam ṛtá-vani ǁ

Fire whom with the sacrifices, with the light verily they speed like a friend firmly established in the man who possesses the Truth.

8.23.9

ऋ॒तावा॑नमृतायवो य॒ज्ञस्य॒ साध॑नं गि॒रा ।

उपो॑ एनं जुजुषु॒र्नम॑सस्प॒दे ॥

ṛtá-vānam ṛta-yavaḥ yajñásya sā́dhanam girā́ ǀ

úṣaḥ enam jujuṣuḥ námasaḥ padé ǁ

To Fire the possessor of the Truth, the accomplisher of the sacrifice, the seekers of the Truth have come with the word and cleave to him in the seat of the adoration.

8.23.10

अच्छा॑ नो॒ अंगि॑रस्तमं य॒ज्ञासो॑ यंतु सं॒यतः॑ ।

होता॒ यो अस्ति॑ वि॒क्ष्वा य॒शस्त॑मः ॥

áccha naḥ áṅgiraḥ-tamam yajñā́saḥ yantu sam-yátaḥ ǀ

hótā yáḥ ásti vikṣú ā́ yaśáḥ-tamaḥ ǁ

Let our sacrifices go towards him united in their effort, to him most fiery-wise of the Angirasas who is the Priest of the call in men and most glorious.

8.23.11

अग्ने॒ तव॒ त्ये अ॑ज॒रेंधा॑नासो बृ॒हद्भाः ।

अश्वा॑ इव॒ वृष॑णस्तविषी॒यवः॑ ॥

ágne táva tyé ajara índhānāsaḥ bṛhát bhā́ḥ ǀ

áśvāḥ-iva vṛ́ṣaṇaḥ taviṣī-yávaḥ ǁ

O ageless Fire, those lights of thine kindling the Vast are like male and mighty horses;

8.23.12

स त्वं न॑ ऊर्जां पते र॒यिं रा॑स्व सु॒वीर्यं॑ ।

प्राव॑ नस्तो॒के तन॑ये स॒मत्स्वा ॥

sáḥ tvám naḥ ūrjām pate rayím rāsva su-vī́ryam ǀ

prá ava naḥ toké tánaye samát-su ā́ ǁ

So do thou, O Lord of Energies, give us the wealth, hero-might; protect us in our battles, in the Son of our begetting.

8.23.13

यद्वा उ॑ वि॒श्पतिः॑ शि॒तः सुप्री॑तो॒ मनु॑षो वि॒शि ।

विश्वेद॒ग्निः प्रति॒ रक्षां॑सि सेधति ॥

yát vái ūṃ␣íti viśpátiḥ śitáḥ sú-prītaḥ mánuṣaḥ viśí ǀ

víśvā ít agníḥ práti rákṣāṃsi sedhati ǁ

Since, indeed, the lord of the peoples, keen and glad in the house of man, wards off all demon-powers, —

8.23.14

श्रु॒ष्ट्य॑ग्ने॒ नव॑स्य मे॒ स्तोम॑स्य वीर विश्पते ।

नि मा॒यिन॒स्तपु॑षा र॒क्षसो॑ दह ॥

śruṣṭī́ agne návasya me stómasya vīra viśpate ǀ

ní māyínaḥ tápuṣā rakṣásaḥ daha ǁ

O Fire, with thy hearing of my new laud, with thy burning flame, consume utterly the demon magicians, O hero, O lord of the peoples.

8.23.15

न तस्य॑ मा॒यया॑ च॒न रि॒पुरी॑शीत॒ मर्त्यः॑ ।

यो अ॒ग्नये॑ द॒दाश॑ ह॒व्यदा॑तिभिः ॥

ná tásya māyáyā caná ripúḥ īśīta mártyaḥ ǀ

yáḥ agnáye dadā́śa havyádāti-bhiḥ ǁ

Not even by magic can the mortal foe master the man who offers worship to the Fire with his gifts of the oblation.

8.23.16

व्य॑श्वस्त्वा वसु॒विद॑मुक्ष॒ण्युर॑प्रीणा॒दृषिः॑ ।

म॒हो रा॒ये तमु॑ त्वा॒ समि॑धीमहि ॥

ví-aśvaḥ tvā vasu-vídam ukṣaṇyúḥ aprīṇāt ṛ́ṣiḥ ǀ

maháḥ rāyé tám ūṃ␣íti tvā sám idhīmahi ǁ

8.23.17

उ॒शना॑ का॒व्यस्त्वा॒ नि होता॑रमसादयत् ।

आ॒य॒जिं त्वा॒ मन॑वे जा॒तवे॑दसं ॥

uśánā kāvyáḥ tvā ní hótāram asādayat ǀ

ā-yajím tvā mánave jātá-vedasam ǁ

Thee Ushana of the inspired wisdom set within for men as the Priest of the call, the doer of sacrifice, the knower of all things born.

8.23.18

विश्वे॒ हि त्वा॑ स॒जोष॑सो दे॒वासो॑ दू॒तमक्र॑त ।

श्रु॒ष्टी दे॑व प्रथ॒मो य॒ज्ञियो॑ भुवः ॥

víśve hí tvā sa-jóṣasaḥ devā́saḥ dūtám ákrata ǀ

śruṣṭī́ deva prathamáḥ yajñíyaḥ bhuvaḥ ǁ

For all the gods with one mind made thee the messenger; O godhead, thou becamest by inspired knowledge supreme and a lord of sacrifice.

8.23.19

इ॒मं घा॑ वी॒रो अ॒मृतं॑ दू॒तं कृ॑ण्वीत॒ मर्त्यः॑ ।

पा॒व॒कं कृ॒ष्णव॑र्तनिं॒ विहा॑यसं ॥

imám gha vīráḥ amṛ́tam dūtám kṛṇvīta mártyaḥ ǀ

pāvakám kṛṣṇá-vartanim ví-hāyasam ǁ

Him immortal let the mortal hero make his envoy, the purifying Fire with his black path, vast in his wideness.

8.23.20

तं हु॑वेम य॒तस्रु॑चः सु॒भासं॑ शु॒क्रशो॑चिषं ।

वि॒शाम॒ग्निम॒जरं॑ प्र॒त्नमीड्यं॑ ॥

tám huvema yatá-srucaḥ su-bhā́sam śukrá-śociṣam ǀ

viśā́m agním ajáram pratnám ī́ḍyam ǁ

Him let us call putting forth the ladle, the luminous, the brilliant in light, one to be prayed by men, the ancient and unaging Fire.

8.23.21

यो अ॑स्मै ह॒व्यदा॑तिभि॒राहु॑तिं॒ मर्तोऽवि॑धत् ।

भूरि॒ पोषं॒ स ध॑त्ते वी॒रव॒द्यशः॑ ॥

yáḥ asmai havyádāti-bhiḥ ā́-hutim mártaḥ ávidhat ǀ

bhū́ri póṣam sáḥ dhatte vīrá-vat yáśaḥ ǁ

For the mortal who performs sacrifice to him by his gifts of the offering he founds much increase and a glory of his hero-strengths.

8.23.22

प्र॒थ॒मं जा॒तवे॑दसम॒ग्निं य॒ज्ञेषु॑ पू॒र्व्यं ।

प्रति॒ स्रुगे॑ति॒ नम॑सा ह॒विष्म॑ती ॥

prathamám jātá-vedasam agním yajñéṣu pūrvyám ǀ

práti srúk eti námasā havíṣmatī ǁ

To the Fire, the ancient, the first and supreme, the knower of all things born in the sacrifices with the obeisance comes the ladle full of the oblation.

8.23.23

आभि॑र्विधेमा॒ग्नये॒ ज्येष्ठा॑भिर्व्यश्व॒वत् ।

मंहि॑ष्ठाभिर्म॒तिभिः॑ शु॒क्रशो॑चिषे ॥

ā́bhiḥ vidhema agnáye jyéṣṭhābhiḥ vyaśva-vát ǀ

máṃhiṣṭhābhiḥ matí-bhiḥ śukrá-śociṣe ǁ

May we offer sacrifice as did Vyashwa with these greatest and richest thinkings to Fire, the brilliant in light.

8.23.24

नू॒नम॑र्च॒ विहा॑यसे॒ स्तोमे॑भिः स्थूरयूप॒वत् ।

ऋषे॑ वैयश्व॒ दम्या॑या॒ग्नये॑ ॥

nūnám arca ví-hāyase stómebhiḥ sthūrayūpa-vát ǀ

ṛ́ṣe vaiyaśva dámyāya agnáye ǁ

O Rishi, son of Vyashwa, now sing the word of illumination as did Sthurayupa, to the Fire, vast in his wideness, the dweller in the house.

8.23.25

अति॑थिं॒ मानु॑षाणां सू॒नुं वन॒स्पती॑नां ।

विप्रा॑ अ॒ग्निमव॑से प्र॒त्नमी॑ळते ॥

átithim mā́nuṣāṇām sūnúm vánaspátīnām ǀ

víprāḥ agním ávase pratnám īḷate ǁ

The guest of men, the son of the Trees, the illumined seers praise for his protection, the ancient Fire.

8.23.26

म॒हो विश्वाँ॑ अ॒भि ष॒तो॒३่ऽभि ह॒व्यानि॒ मानु॑षा ।

अग्ने॒ नि ष॑त्सि॒ नम॒साधि॑ ब॒र्हिषि॑ ॥

maháḥ víśvān abhí satáḥ abhí havyā́ni mā́nuṣā ǀ

ágne ní satsi námasā ádhi barhíṣi ǁ

Turned towards all the great beings, turned towards our human offerings, by our obeisance, O Fire, thou takest thy seat on the sacred grass.

8.23.27

वंस्वा॑ नो॒ वार्या॑ पु॒रु वंस्व॑ रा॒यः पु॑रु॒स्पृहः॑ ।

सु॒वीर्य॑स्य प्र॒जाव॑तो॒ यश॑स्वतः ॥

váṃsva naḥ vā́ryā purú váṃsva rāyáḥ puru-spṛ́haḥ ǀ

su-vī́ryasya prajā́-vataḥ yáśasvataḥ ǁ

Conquer for us many desirable things, take possession of the wealth that brings us our many longings and hero-energy and the offspring and the glory.

8.23.28

त्वं व॑रो सु॒षाम्णेऽग्ने॒ जना॑य चोदय ।

सदा॑ वसो रा॒तिं य॑विष्ठ॒ शश्व॑ते ॥

tvám varo␣íti su-sā́mne ágne jánāya codaya ǀ

sádā vaso␣íti rātím yaviṣṭha śáśvate ǁ

8.23.29

त्वं हि सु॑प्र॒तूरसि॒ त्वं नो॒ गोम॑ती॒रिषः॑ ।

म॒हो रा॒यः सा॒तिम॑ग्ने॒ अपा॑ वृधि ॥

tvám hí su-pratū́ḥ ási tvám naḥ gó-matīḥ íṣaḥ ǀ

maháḥ rāyáḥ sātím agne ápa vṛdhi ǁ

Thou art he who breaks through3, thou openest to us the luminous impulsions; open to us the conquest of the great Riches, O Fire.

8.23.30

अग्ने॒ त्वं य॒शा अ॒स्या मि॒त्रावरु॑णा वह ।

ऋ॒तावा॑ना स॒म्राजा॑ पू॒तद॑क्षसा ॥

ágne tvám yaśā́ḥ asi ā́ mitrā́váruṇā vaha ǀ

ṛtá-vānā sam-rā́jā pūtá-dakṣasā ǁ

O Fire, thou art the glorious one; bring to us Varuna and Mitra, the all-rulers who possess the Truth and have the purified judgment.
