Collected Poems

CWSA.- Volume 2

Part Seven. Pondicherry, c. 1927 – 1947
Poems Written as Metrical Experiments

O Life, thy breath is but a cry

O Life, thy breath is but a cry to the Light

Immortal, whence has come thy swift delight1,

Thy grasp.

All things in vain thy hands seize;

Earth’s music fails, the notes cease

Or rasp.

Aloud thou callst2 to blind Fate,

“Remove the bar, the gold gate

Unhasp.”

But never hast3 thou the goal yet of4 thy race

Neared5, nor thrilled with6 the ineffable Face,

The7 clasp.
