The Eighth Hymn to Agni
Divine Will, the Universal Fulfiller
[The Rishi having declared the continuity of the great effort and aspiration from the earliest times hymns divine Will harboured in us, inmate, priest of the sacrifice, master of this dwelling, who fulfils the universal impulse in all its multiplicity and both stimulates and leads it in act and knowledge.]
5.8.1
त्वाम॑ग्न ऋता॒यव॒: समी॑धिरे प्र॒त्नं प्र॒त्नास॑ ऊ॒तये॑ सहस्कृत ।
पु॒रु॒श्च॒न्द्रं य॑ज॒तं वि॒श्वधा॑यसं॒ दमू॑नसं गृ॒हप॑तिं॒ वरे॑ण्यम् ॥१॥
tvām agne ṛta-yavaḥ sam īdhire pratnam pratnāsaḥ ūtaye sahaḥ-kṛta
puru-candram yajatam viśva-dhāyasam damūnasam gṛha-patim vareṇyam
Will who art by force created in us, thee the pristine Power the pristine seekers of the Truth kindled entirely that they might grow in their being, the god in the sacrifice, who because he has the multitude of his delights establishes the all,1 domiciled in us, master of the dwelling, inmate supremely desirable.
5.8.2
त्वाम॑ग्ने॒ अति॑थिं पू॒र्व्यं विशः॑ शो॒चिष्के॑शं गृ॒हप॑तिं॒ नि षे॑दिरे ।
बृ॒हत्के॑तुं पुरु॒रूपं॑ धन॒स्पृतं॑ सु॒शर्मा॑णं॒ स्वव॑सं जर॒द्विष॑म् ॥२॥
tvām agne atithim pūrvyam viśaḥ śociḥ-keśam gṛha-patim ni sedire
bṛhat-ketum puru-rūpam dhana-spṛtam su-śarmāṇam su-avasam jarat-viṣam
Will, in thee the supreme2 guest and master of the house with his locks of light the peoples take their foundation because thou hast with thee vast vision and the multitude of thy forms and the extraction of our riches and the perfect peace and perfect being and the destruction of enemies.3
5.8.3
त्वाम॑ग्ने॒ मानु॑षीरीळते॒ विशो॑ होत्रा॒विदं॒ विवि॑चिं रत्न॒धात॑मम् ।
गुहा॒ सन्तं॑ सुभग वि॒श्वद॑र्शतं तुविष्व॒णसं॑ सु॒यजं॑ घृत॒श्रिय॑म् ॥३॥
tvām agne mānuṣīḥ īḷate viśaḥ hotrā-vidam vivicim ratna-dhātamam
guhā santam su-bhaga viśva-darśatam tuvi-svaṇasam su-yajam ghṛta-śriyam
Will, thee the human peoples seek with their adoration who hast knowledge of the powers4 of the sacrifice and rightly discriminating holdest for us utterly the delight and thou art seated in our secret being, O perfect enjoyer, seeing with a universal vision, pouring the multitude of thy voices, doing aright the sacrifice, agleam with the glory of the clarity.
5.8.4
त्वाम॑ग्ने धर्ण॒सिं वि॒श्वधा॑ व॒यं गी॒र्भिर्गृ॒णन्तो॒ नम॒सोप॑ सेदिम ।
स नो॑ जुषस्व समिधा॒नो अ॑ङ्गिरो दे॒वो मर्त॑स्य य॒शसा॑ सुदी॒तिभि॑: ॥४॥
tvām agne dharṇasim viśva-dhā vayam gīḥbhiḥ gṛṇantaḥ namasā upa sedima
saḥ naḥ juṣasva sam-idhānaḥ aṅgiraḥ devaḥ martasya yaśasā sudītibhiḥ
Will who sustainest the law of things in their universality, thee we approach with obeisance of submission and express thee by the words; so do thou, O puissant seer, approve and cleave to us, a godhead set high-blazing by the victory5 of the mortal, by his right illuminings.
5.8.5
त्वम॑ग्ने पुरु॒रूपो॑ वि॒शेवि॑शे॒ वयो॑ दधासि प्र॒त्नथा॑ पुरुष्टुत ।
पु॒रूण्यन्ना॒ सह॑सा॒ वि रा॑जसि॒ त्विषि॒: सा ते॑ तित्विषा॒णस्य॒ नाधृषे॑ ॥५॥
tvam agne puru-rūpaḥ viśe-viśe vayaḥ dadhāsi pratna-thā puru-stuta
purūṇi annā sahasā vi rājasi tviṣiḥ sā te titviṣāṇasya na ā-dhṛṣe
Will multiply affirmed, thou takest many forms according to the man and establishest for each his wide manifestation even as of old; thou illuminest in thy force the many things that are thy food and none can do violence to that blaze of thy light when so thou blazest up.
5.8.6
त्वाम॑ग्ने समिधा॒नं य॑विष्ठ्य दे॒वा दू॒तं च॑क्रिरे हव्य॒वाह॑नम् ।
उ॒रु॒ज्रय॑सं घृ॒तयो॑नि॒माहु॑तं त्वे॒षं चक्षु॑र्दधिरे चोद॒यन्म॑ति ॥६॥
tvām agne sam-idhānam yaviṣṭhya devāḥ dūtam cakrire havya-vāhanam
uru-jrayasam ghṛta-yonim ā-hutam tveṣam cakṣuḥ dadhire codayat-mati
Will, youngest vigour, thee the gods have kindled high and made their envoy to man and the bearer of his offerings; wide in thy rapidities, born from the clarity, receiver of the oblation, thee they have set in him as a keen and burning eye that urges his mentality.
5.8.7
त्वाम॑ग्ने प्र॒दिव॒ आहु॑तं घृ॒तैः सु॑म्ना॒यवः॑ सुष॒मिधा॒ समी॑धिरे ।
स वा॑वृधा॒न ओष॑धीभिरुक्षि॒तो॒३́ऽभि ज्रयां॑सि॒ पार्थि॑वा॒ वि ति॑ष्ठसे ॥७॥
tvām agne pra-divaḥ ā-hutam ghṛtaiḥ sumna-yavaḥ su-samidhā sam īdhire
saḥ vavṛdhānaḥ oṣadhībhiḥ ukṣitaḥ abhi jrayāṃsi pārthivā vi tiṣṭhase
Will, thee men who seek the bliss kindle high with an entire kindling, fed by their clarities in the front of heaven;6 so increasing, diffused by its growths that hold its heats, thou enterest widely into all the earth-life’s speeding movements.
