1.65.1-2

प॒श्वा न ता॒युं गुहा॒ चत॑न्तं॒ नमो॑ युजा॒नं नमो॒ वह॑न्तम् ॥१॥

स॒जोषा॒ धीरा॑: प॒दैरनु॑ ग्म॒न्नुप॑ त्वा सीद॒न्विश्वे॒ यज॑त्राः ॥२॥

paśvā na tāyum guhā catantam namaḥ yujānam namaḥ vahantam [1]

sa-joṣāḥ dhīrāḥ padaiḥ anu gman upa tvā sīdan viśve yajatrāḥ [2]

He hides himself like a thief with the Cow of vision in the secret cavern of being taking to himself and bearing thither our adoration. The thinkers nurse a common joy in him in their hearts and follow in his way by her footprints. All the Masters of sacrifice come to thee, O Flame, in the secrecy.

1.65.3-4

ऋ॒तस्य॑ दे॒वा अनु॑ व्र॒ता गु॒र्भुव॒त्परि॑ष्टि॒र्द्यौर्न भूम॑ ॥३॥

वर्ध॑न्ती॒मापः॑ प॒न्वा सुशि॑श्विमृ॒तस्य॒ योना॒ गर्भे॒ सुजा॑तम् ॥४॥

ṛtasya devāḥ anu vratā guḥ bhuvat pariṣṭiḥ dyauḥ na bhūma [3]

vardhanti īm āpaḥ panvā su-śiśvim ṛtasya yonā garbhe su-jātam [4]

The Gods follow after him the ways and works of the Truth. He shall stand encompassing the earth like heaven. The Waters increase by their toil growing in his bulk the Flame because he was born perfect in their womb in the house of Truth.

1.65.5-6

पु॒ष्टिर्न र॒ण्वा क्षि॒तिर्न पृ॒थ्वी गि॒रिर्न भुज्म॒ क्षोदो॒ न श॒म्भु ॥५॥

अत्यो॒ नाज्म॒न्सर्ग॑प्रतक्त॒: सिन्धु॒र्न क्षोद॒: क ईं॑ वराते ॥६॥

puṣṭiḥ na raṇvā kṣitiḥ na pṛthvī giriḥ na bhujma kṣodaḥ na śam-bhu [5]

atyaḥ na ajman sarga-prataktaḥ sindhuḥ na kṣodaḥ kaḥ im varāte [6]

He is like delightful increase and like the wide earth our dwelling-place. He is enjoyable like a hill and bliss-giving like fast-running water. He is like a horse in the battle-charge urged to the gallop and like a rushing river, and who then shall hedge in his course?

1.65.7-8

जा॒मिः सिन्धू॑नां॒ भ्राते॑व॒ स्वस्रा॒मिभ्या॒न्न राजा॒ वना॑न्यत्ति ॥७॥

यद्वात॑जूतो॒ वना॒ व्यस्था॑द॒ग्निर्ह॑ दाति॒ रोमा॑ पृथि॒व्याः ॥८॥

jāmiḥ sindhūnām bhrātā-iva svasrām ibhyān na rājā vanāni atti [7]

yat vāta-jūtaḥ vanā vi asthāt agniḥ ha dāti roma pṛthivyāḥ [8]

He is the close comrade of the Rivers as a brother of his sisters. He devours Earth’s pleasant woods as a king devours his enemies. When driven by the breath of the wind he stands about in all the woodland, the Flame tears asunder the hairs of earth’s body.

1.65.9-10

श्वसि॑त्य॒प्सु हं॒सो न सीद॒न्क्रत्वा॒ चेति॑ष्ठो वि॒शामु॑ष॒र्भुत् ॥९॥

सोमो॒ न वे॒धा ऋ॒तप्र॑जातः प॒शुर्न शिश्वा॑ वि॒भुर्दू॒रेभा॑: ॥१०॥

śvasiti ap-su haṃsaḥ na sīdan kratvā cetiṣṭhaḥ viśām uṣaḥ-bhut [9]

somaḥ na vedhāḥ ṛta-prajātaḥ paśuḥ na śiśvā vi-bhuḥ dūre-bhāḥ [10]

He breathes in the Waters like a seated swan. Awake in the dawn he has power by the will of his works to give knowledge to the peoples. He is like the god of the nectar-wine and born of Truth and a creator. He is like the Cow with her child. He is all-pervading and his light is seen from a far distance.

1.67.1-2

वने॑षु जा॒युर्मर्ते॑षु मि॒त्रो वृ॑णी॒ते श्रु॒ष्टिं राजे॑वाजु॒र्यम् ॥१॥

क्षेमो॒ न सा॒धुः क्रतु॒र्न भ॒द्रो भुव॑त्स्वा॒धीर्होता॑ हव्य॒वाट् ॥२॥

vaneṣu jāyuḥ marteṣu mitraḥ vṛṇīte śruṣṭim rājā-iva ajuryam [1]

kṣemaḥ na sādhuḥ kratuḥ na bhadraḥ bhuvat su-ādhīḥ hotā havya-vāṭ [2]

He is the conqueror in the forests, he is the friend in mortals. He chooses for himself inspired knowledge as a king an unaging councillor. He is like a perfect good, he is like a happy will just in its thoughts. He has become to us the priest of our sacrifice and the carrier of our offerings.

1.67.3-4

हस्ते॒ दधा॑नो नृ॒म्णा विश्वा॒न्यमे॑ दे॒वान्धा॒द्गुहा॑ नि॒षीद॑न् ॥३॥

वि॒दन्ती॒मत्र॒ नरो॑ धियं॒धा हृ॒दा यत्त॒ष्टान्मन्त्राँ॒ अशं॑सन् ॥४॥

haste dadhānaḥ nṛmṇā viśvāni ame devān dhāt guhā ni-sīdan [3]

vidanti īm atra naraḥ dhiyam-dhāḥ hṛdā yat taṣṭān mantrān aśaṃsan [4]

He holds in his hands all mights: sitting in the secret cave of being he founds the gods in strength. And it is there that men who hold the thought in their minds, when they have given utterance to its sacred words carved into shape by the heart, discover the god.

1.67.5-6

अ॒जो न क्षां दा॒धार॑ पृथि॒वीं त॒स्तम्भ॒ द्यां मन्त्रे॑भिः स॒त्यैः ॥५॥

प्रि॒या प॒दानि॑ प॒श्वो नि पा॑हि वि॒श्वायु॑रग्ने गु॒हा गुहं॑ गाः ॥६॥

ajaḥ na kṣām dādhāra pṛthivīm tastambha dyām mantrebhiḥ satyaiḥ [5]

priyā padāni paśvaḥ ni pāhi viśva-āyuḥ agne guhā guham gāḥ [6]

He holds like one unborn the wide earth our dwelling-place and pillars heaven with the truth of the sacred words of his thinking. O Flame, thou art universal life; guard the pleasant footholds of the Cow of vision; watch over the herd of the rays in the secrecy of the secret cavern.

1.67.7-8

य ईं॑ चि॒केत॒ गुहा॒ भव॑न्त॒मा यः स॒साद॒ धारा॑मृ॒तस्य॑ ॥७॥

वि ये चृ॒तन्त्यृ॒ता सप॑न्त॒ आदिद्वसू॑नि॒ प्र व॑वाचास्मै ॥८॥

yaḥ īm ciketa guhā bhavantam ā yaḥ sasāda dhārām ṛtasya [7]

vi ye cṛtanti ṛtā sapantaḥ āt it vasūni pra vavāca asmai [8]

He who has known him in the secret cave, he who has come to the stream of the Truth, all who touch and penetrate into the things of the Truth, to such he speaks the word of his treasures.

1.67.9-10

वि यो वी॒रुत्सु॒ रोध॑न्महि॒त्वोत प्र॒जा उ॒त प्र॒सूष्व॒न्तः ॥९॥

चित्ति॑र॒पां दमे॑ वि॒श्वायु॒: सद्मे॑व॒ धीरा॑: स॒म्माय॑ चक्रुः ॥१०॥

vi yaḥ vīrut-su rodhat mahi-tvā uta pra-jāḥ uta pra-sūṣu antariti [9]

cittiḥ apām dame viśva-āyuḥ sadma-iva dhīrāḥ sam-māya cakruḥ [10]

This is the Flame who besieges us with his greatness in all the growths of the earth and who is all the children of the worlds and who is within in all the mothers. He is knowledge in the house of the Waters and he is universal life. The thinkers have measured and constructed him like a mansion.

1.68.1-2

श्री॒णन्नुप॑ स्था॒द्दिवं॑ भुर॒ण्युः स्था॒तुश्च॒रथ॑म॒क्तून्व्यू॑र्णोत् ॥१॥

परि॒ यदे॑षा॒मेको॒ विश्वे॑षां॒ भुव॑द्दे॒वो दे॒वानां॑ महि॒त्वा ॥२॥

śrīṇan upa sthāt divam bhuraṇyuḥ sthātuḥ caratham aktūn vi ūrṇot [1]

pari yat eṣām ekaḥ viśveṣām bhuvat devaḥ devānām mahi-tvā [2]

The Carrier of our gifts speeds on his way and reaches up towards heaven. He unravels out of the nights all that is stable and all that moves. This is he that becomes the one God who is around all the gods in his greatness.

1.68.3-4

आदित्ते॒ विश्वे॒ क्रतुं॑ जुषन्त॒ शुष्का॒द्यद्दे॑व जी॒वो जनि॑ष्ठाः ॥३॥

भज॑न्त॒ विश्वे॑ देव॒त्वं नाम॑ ऋ॒तं सप॑न्तो अ॒मृत॒मेवै॑: ॥४॥

āt it te viśve kratum juṣanta śuṣkāt yat deva jīvaḥ janiṣṭhāḥ [3]

bhajanta viśve devatvaṃ nāma ṛtaṃ sapanto amṛtam evaiḥ [4]

All serve with gladness thy will to works when, O God, thou art born as the living being from a dry matter. All by thy movings get touch of the Truth and touch of immortality and they enjoy the Name, the Godhead.

1.68.5-6

ऋ॒तस्य॒ प्रेषा॑ ऋ॒तस्य॑ धी॒तिर्वि॒श्वायु॒र्विश्वे॒ अपां॑सि चक्रुः ॥५॥

यस्तुभ्यं॒ दाशा॒द्यो वा॑ ते॒ शिक्षा॒त्तस्मै॑ चिकि॒त्वान्र॒यिं द॑यस्व ॥६॥

ṛtasya preṣāḥ ṛtasya dhītiḥ viśva-āyuḥ viśve apāṃsi cakruḥ [5]

yaḥ tubhyam dāśāt yaḥ vā te śikṣāt tasmai cikitvān rayim dayasva [6]

He is the missioned impulse of Truth and the thinking of the Truth. He is the universal life and all do in him their works. To him who gives to thee and to him who takes of thee be knower of the knowledge and give him his portion of thy treasure.

1.68.7-8

होता॒ निष॑त्तो॒ मनो॒रप॑त्ये॒ स चि॒न्न्वा॑सां॒ पती॑ रयी॒णाम् ॥७॥

इ॒च्छन्त॒ रेतो॑ मि॒थस्त॒नूषु॒ सं जा॑नत॒ स्वैर्दक्षै॒रमू॑राः ॥८॥

hotā ni-sattaḥ manoḥ apatye saḥ cit nu āsām patiḥ rayīṇām [7]

icchanta retaḥ mithaḥ tanūṣu sam jānata svaiḥ dakṣaiḥ amūrāḥ [8]

He is the priest of the sacrifice who is seated in the Son of Man: he is the lord of these riches. The wise desire mutually his seed in their bodies and they come altogether to know him by their own discerning minds.

1.68.9-10

पि॒तुर्न पु॒त्राः क्रतुं॑ जुषन्त॒ श्रोष॒न्ये अ॑स्य॒ शासं॑ तु॒रासः॑ ॥९॥

वि राय॑ और्णो॒द्दुरः॑ पुरु॒क्षुः पि॒पेश॒ नाकं॒ स्तृभि॒र्दमू॑नाः ॥१०॥

pituḥ na putrāḥ kratum juṣanta śroṣan ye asya śāsam turāsaḥ [9]

vi rāyaḥ aurṇot duraḥ puru-kṣuḥ pipeśa nākam stṛbhiḥ damūnāḥ [10]

Those who listen to his word of instruction, those who are swift to the journey, serve gladly his will as sons the will of a father. He is the house of a multitude of riches and flings wide the door of his felicitous treasure. He is the dweller in the home and gives form to Paradise by the light of his stars.

1.66.1-2

र॒यिर्न चि॒त्रा सूरो॒ न सं॒दृगायु॒र्न प्रा॒णो नित्यो॒ न सू॒नुः ॥१॥

तक्वा॒ न भूर्णि॒र्वना॑ सिषक्ति॒ पयो॒ न धे॒नुः शुचि॑र्वि॒भावा॑ ॥२॥

rayiḥ na citrā sūraḥ na sam-dṛk āyuḥ na prāṇaḥ nityaḥ na sūnuḥ [1]

takvā na bhūrṇiḥ vanā sisakti payaḥ na dhenuḥ śuciḥ vibhā-vā [2]

He is as if a marvellous shining riches and like the wide seeing of the sun. He is as if life and the breath of our existence and he is as if our eternal child. He is like a galloper that bears us. He fastens on the woodlands. He gives of his substance as the cow its milk. He is wide and lustrous, he is very bright and pure.

1.66.3-4

दा॒धार॒ क्षेम॒मोको॒ न र॒ण्वो यवो॒ न प॒क्वो जेता॒ जना॑नाम् ॥३॥

ऋषि॒र्न स्तुभ्वा॑ वि॒क्षु प्र॑श॒स्तो वा॒जी न प्री॒तो वयो॑ दधाति ॥४॥

dādhāra kṣemam okaḥ na raṇvaḥ yavaḥ na pakvaḥ jetā janānām [3]

ṛṣiḥ na stubhvā vikṣu pra-śastaḥ vājī na prītaḥ vayaḥ dadhāti [4]

He is pleasant like a home and holds all our good. He is to us like ripe corn. He is a conqueror of men and like a chanting Rishi; the word of him is among the folk. He is like an exulting steed and he lays on us our birth to knowledge.

1.66.5-6

दु॒रोक॑शोचि॒: क्रतु॒र्न नित्यो॑ जा॒येव॒ योना॒वरं॒ विश्व॑स्मै ॥५॥

चि॒त्रो यदभ्रा॑ट् छ्वे॒तो न वि॒क्षु रथो॒ न रु॒क्मी त्वे॒षः स॒मत्सु॑ ॥६॥

duroka-śociḥ kratuḥ na nityaḥ jāyā-iva yonau aram viśvasmai [5]

citraḥ yat abhrāṭ śvetaḥ na vikṣu rathaḥ na rukmī tveṣaḥ samat-su [6]

He is light in a house difficult to inhabit1. He is as an eternal will that acts in us; he is like a wife in our chamber and sufficient to every man. When he burns out wonderful and manifold, he is as if the white horse in the peoples. He is like a chariot made of gold: he is like a keen flame in the battles.

1.66.7-8

सेने॑व सृ॒ष्टामं॑ दधा॒त्यस्तु॒र्न दि॒द्युत्त्वे॒षप्र॑तीका ॥७॥

य॒मो ह॑ जा॒तो य॒मो जनि॑त्वं जा॒रः क॒नीनां॒ पति॒र्जनी॑नाम् ॥८॥

senā-iva sṛṣṭā amam dadhāti astuḥ na didyut tveṣa-pratīkā [7]

yamaḥ ha jātaḥ yamaḥ jani-tvam jāraḥ kanīnām patiḥ janīnām [8]

He is like an army running to the charge and puts strength in us: he is like the flaming shaft of the Archer that has a keen burning face. He is the twin that is born and the twin who is that which is to be born. He is the lover of the virgins and the husband of the mothers.

1.66.9-10

तं व॑श्च॒राथा॑ व॒यं व॑स॒त्यास्तं॒ न गावो॒ नक्ष॑न्त इ॒द्धम् ॥९॥

सिन्धु॒र्न क्षोद॒: प्र नीची॑रैनो॒न्नव॑न्त॒ गाव॒: स्व१́र्दृशी॑के ॥१०॥

tam vaḥ carāthā vayam vasatyā astam na gāvaḥ nakṣante iddham [9]

sindhuḥ na kṣodaḥ pra nīcīḥ ainot navante gāvaḥ svaḥ dṛśīke [10]

When his light is kindled, we come to him as the herds come to their home: we come to him by your journeying, O gods, and we come to him by your sitting still. He is like a river running in its channel and sends in front the downward Waters: the herd of the Rays move to him in the seeing of the world of the Sun.

1.69.1-2

शु॒क्रः शु॑शु॒क्वाँ उ॒षो न जा॒रः प॒प्रा स॑मी॒ची दि॒वो न ज्योति॑: ॥१॥

परि॒ प्रजा॑त॒: क्रत्वा॑ बभूथ॒ भुवो॑ दे॒वानां॑ पि॒ता पु॒त्रः सन् ॥२॥

śukraḥ śuśukvān uṣaḥ na jāraḥ paprā samīcī iti sam-īcī divaḥ na jyotiḥ [1]

pari pra-jātaḥ kratvā babhūtha bhuvaḥ devānām pitā putraḥ san [2]

He burns out bright as if the lover of Dawn and fills the two equal worlds like the light of heaven. He is born by our will to works and he comes into being all around us. He is the son and becomes the father of the Gods.

1.69.3-4

वे॒धा अदृ॑प्तो अ॒ग्निर्वि॑जा॒नन्नूध॒र्न गोनां॒ स्वाद्मा॑ पितू॒नाम् ॥३॥

जने॒ न शेव॑ आ॒हूर्य॒: सन्मध्ये॒ निष॑त्तो र॒ण्वो दु॑रो॒णे ॥४॥

vedhāḥ adṛptaḥ agniḥ vi-janan ūdhaḥ na gonām svādma pitūnām [3]

jane na śeva ā-hūryaḥ san madhye ni-sattaḥ raṇvaḥ duroṇe [4]

This is the Fire that has perfect knowledge and is a creator whom none can rend asunder. He is as if the teat of the cows of light and the sweetness of the draughts of the wine. He is as if one happy in the creature and must be laid hands on where he sits blissful in the middle of the house.

1.69.5-6

पु॒त्रो न जा॒तो र॒ण्वो दु॑रो॒णे वा॒जी न प्री॒तो विशो॒ वि ता॑रीत् ॥५॥

विशो॒ यदह्वे॒ नृभि॒: सनी॑ळा अ॒ग्निर्दे॑व॒त्वा विश्वा॑न्यश्याः ॥६॥

putraḥ na jātaḥ raṇvaḥ duroṇe vājī na prītaḥ viśaḥ vi tārīt [5]

viśaḥ yat ahve nṛbhiḥ sa-nīḷāḥ agniḥ deva-tvā viśvāni aśyāḥ [6]

He is as if our rapturous son born to us in the house and he is like a courser pleased and glad that carries to safety the peoples. When I call to the Nations who dwell in one lair with the Strong Ones, the Flame enjoys all the godheads.

1.69.7-8

नकि॑ष्ट ए॒ता व्र॒ता मि॑नन्ति॒ नृभ्यो॒ यदे॒भ्यः श्रु॒ष्टिं च॒कर्थ॑ ॥७॥

तत्तु ते॒ दंसो॒ यदह॑न्समा॒नैर्नृभि॒र्यद्यु॒क्तो वि॒वे रपां॑सि ॥८॥

nakiḥ te etā vratā minanti nṛ-bhyaḥ yat ebhyaḥ śruṣṭim cakartha [7]

tat tu te daṃsaḥ yat ahan samānaiḥ nṛbhiḥ yat yuktaḥ viveḥ rapāṃsi [8]

None can impair the ways of thy works when thou hast created inspired knowledge for the Strong Ones. This is thy work that yoked with the equal Gods thou smitest and scatterest the powers of evil.

1.69.9-10

उ॒षो न जा॒रो वि॒भावो॒स्रः संज्ञा॑तरूप॒श्चिके॑तदस्मै ॥९॥

त्मना॒ वह॑न्तो॒ दुरो॒ व्यृ॑ण्व॒न्नव॑न्त॒ विश्वे॒ स्व१́र्दृशी॑के ॥१०॥

uṣaḥ na jāraḥ vibhā-vā usraḥ sañjñāta-rūpaḥ ciketat asmai [9]

tmanā vahantaḥ duraḥ vi ṛṇvan navanta viśve svaḥ dṛśīke [10]

Very bright and lustrous is he like the paramour of Dawn. Let his form be known and his knowledge awake for this human being, let all bear him in themselves, swing wide the gates and walk in the vision of the world of the Sun.

1.70.1-2

व॒नेम॑ पू॒र्वीर॒र्यो म॑नी॒षा अ॒ग्निः सु॒शोको॒ विश्वा॑न्यश्याः ॥१॥

आ दैव्या॑नि व्र॒ता चि॑कि॒त्वाना मानु॑षस्य॒ जन॑स्य॒ जन्म॑ ॥२॥

vanema pūrvīḥ aryaḥ manīṣā agniḥ suśokaḥ viśvāni aśyāḥ [1]

ā daivyāni vratā cikitvān ā mānuṣasya janasya janma [2]

Men battling by our mind of thought may we make conquest of many powers and Agni burning brightly enjoy and possess in us all things that are, know the divine workings and know the births of the human creature.

1.70.3-4

गर्भो॒ यो अ॒पां गर्भो॒ वना॑नां॒ गर्भ॑श्च स्था॒तां गर्भ॑श्च॒रथा॑म् ॥३॥

अद्रौ॑ चिदस्मा अ॒न्तर्दु॑रो॒णे वि॒शां न विश्वो॑ अ॒मृतः॑ स्वा॒धीः ॥४॥

garbhaḥ yaḥ apām garbhaḥ vanānām garbhaḥ ca sthātām garbhaḥ carathām [3]

adrau cit asmai antaḥ duroṇe viśām na viśvaḥ amṛtaḥ su-ādhīḥ [4]

He is the child of the waters and the child of the forests and the child of things stable and the child of things that move. He is there for man in the stone of the mountain and within in the house. He is one universal to the peoples and the Immortal and the right-thinking One.

1.70.5-6

स हि क्ष॒पावाँ॑ अ॒ग्नी र॑यी॒णां दाश॒द्यो अ॑स्मा॒ अरं॑ सू॒क्तैः ॥५॥

ए॒ता चि॑कित्वो॒ भूमा॒ नि पा॑हि दे॒वानां॒ जन्म॒ मर्ताँ॑श्च वि॒द्वान् ॥६॥

saḥ hi kṣapā-vān agniḥ rayīṇām dāśat yaḥ asmai aram su-uktaiḥ [5]

etā cikitvaḥ bhūma ni pāhi devānām janma martān ca vidvān [6]

The Fire is master of the nights and imparts to man sufficiency of his treasures by the power of perfect words. O knower, who hast knowledge of the births of the gods and knowledge of mortals, guard these earths.

1.70.7-8

वर्धा॒न्यं पू॒र्वीः क्ष॒पो विरू॑पाः स्था॒तुश्च॒ रथ॑मृ॒तप्र॑वीतम् ॥७॥

अरा॑धि॒ होता॒ स्व१́र्निष॑त्तः कृ॒ण्वन्विश्वा॒न्यपां॑सि स॒त्या ॥८॥

vardhān yam pūrvīḥ kṣapaḥ vi-rūpāḥ sthātuḥ ca ratham ṛta-pravītam [7]

arādhi hotā svaḥ ni-sattaḥ kṛṇvan viśvāni apāṃsi satyā [8]

Many nights that are different in form increase one who is the moving and the stable, one who has come from the Truth. He is a priest of sacrifice and enriches us where he sits in the world of the sun making our works things of truth.

1.70.9-10

गोषु॒ प्रश॑स्तिं॒ वने॑षु धिषे॒ भर॑न्त॒ विश्वे॑ ब॒लिं स्व॑र्णः ॥९॥

वि त्वा॒ नरः॑ पुरु॒त्रा स॑पर्यन्पि॒तुर्न जिव्रे॒र्वि वेदो॑ भरन्त ॥१०॥

goṣu pra-śastim vaneṣu dhiṣe bharanta viśve balim svaḥ naḥ [9]

vi tvā naraḥ puru-trā saparyan pituḥ na jivreḥ vi vedī bharanta [10]

Thou thinkest out thy hymn of utterance in the rays and in the forests and all the gods carry to us the light of the sun-world as a sacrifice. Men do thee service in the manifoldness and come bringing from thee riches of knowledge as from an aged father.

1.70.11

सा॒धुर्न गृ॒ध्नुरस्ते॑व॒ शूरो॒ याते॑व भी॒मस्त्वे॒षः स॒मत्सु॑ ॥११॥

sādhuḥ na gṛdhnuḥ astā-iva śūraḥ yātā-iva bhīmaḥ tveṣaḥ samat-su

He is like a perfecter of works, one who is a hungry seizer. He is like a hero shooting arrows and like a terrible assailant in the battle.

1.71.1

उप॒ प्र जि॑न्वन्नुश॒तीरु॒शन्तं॒ पतिं॒ न नित्यं॒ जन॑य॒: सनी॑ळाः ।

स्वसा॑र॒: श्यावी॒मरु॑षीमजुष्रञ्चि॒त्रमु॒च्छन्ती॑मु॒षसं॒ न गावः॑ ॥१॥

upa pra jinvan uśatīḥ uśantam patim na nityam janayaḥ sa-nīḷāḥ

svasāraḥ śyāvīm aruṣīm ajuṣran citram ucchantīm uṣasam na gāvaḥ

The Mothers desire and are desired by him, sisters dwelling in one mansion, and come to him with joy as to their eternal husband, even as the rays to the Dawn,– Dawn dusk and flushing and breaking into rich lustres.

1.71.2

वी॒ळु चि॑द्दृ॒ळ्हा पि॒तरो॑ न उ॒क्थैरद्रिं॑ रुज॒न्नङ्गि॑रसो॒ रवे॑ण ।

च॒क्रुर्दि॒वो बृ॑ह॒तो गा॒तुम॒स्मे अह॒: स्व॑र्विविदुः के॒तुमु॒स्राः ॥२॥

vīḷu cit dṛḷhā pitaraḥ naḥ ukthaiḥ adrim rujan aṅgirasaḥ raveṇa

cakruḥ divaḥ bṛhataḥ gātum asme iti ahariti svaḥ vividuḥ ketum usrāḥ

Our fathers by their word, the Angiras seers, broke the strong and stubborn places, our fathers burst by their cry the rock of the mountain, made within us the path to the Great Heaven, discovered the Day and the sun-world and thought-vision and the herds of light.

1.71.3

दध॑न्नृ॒तं ध॒नय॑न्नस्य धी॒तिमादिद॒र्यो दि॑धि॒ष्वो॒३́ विभृ॑त्राः ।

अतृ॑ष्यन्तीर॒पसो॑ य॒न्त्यच्छा॑ दे॒वाञ्जन्म॒ प्रय॑सा व॒र्धय॑न्तीः ॥३॥

dadhan ṛtam dhanayan asya dhītim āt it aryaḥ dadhiṣvaḥ vi-bhṛtrāḥ

atṛṣyantīḥ apasaḥ yanti accha devān janma prayasā vardhayantīḥ

Then the battling and thinking peoples held the Truth and enriched the thought of the human being and bore it in all its breadth; unthirsting, doers of the work increasing the divine birth by the delight-offering, their walk is towards the gods.

1.71.4

मथी॒द्यदीं॒ विभृ॑तो मात॒रिश्वा॑ गृ॒हेगृ॑हे श्ये॒तो जेन्यो॒ भूत् ।

आदीं॒ राज्ञे॒ न सही॑यसे॒ सचा॒ सन्ना दू॒त्यं१́ भृग॑वाणो विवाय ॥४॥

mathīt yat īm vi-bhṛtaḥ mātariśvā gṛhe-gṛhe śyetaḥ jenyaḥ bhūt

āt īm rājñe na sahīyase sacā san ā dūtyam bhṛgavāṇaḥ vivāya

When Matarishwan the Breath borne variously within us churned him into being, the Lord of Fire became the white and blissful one in every house. Man was a seer and kindler of the divine Fire and he dwelt with him like a companion and sent him on his messages like an envoy to a powerful king.

1.71.5

म॒हे यत्पि॒त्र ईं॒ रसं॑ दि॒वे करव॑ त्सरत्पृश॒न्य॑श्चिकि॒त्वान् ।

सृ॒जदस्ता॑ धृष॒ता दि॒द्युम॑स्मै॒ स्वायां॑ दे॒वो दु॑हि॒तरि॒ त्विषिं॑ धात् ॥५॥

mahe yat pitre īm rasam dive kaḥ ava tsarat pṛśanyaḥ cikitvān

sṛjat astā dhṛṣatā didyum asmai svāyām devaḥ duhitari tviṣim dhāt

When he had made this sap of essence for the great Father Heaven, he came down, one close in touch, one who has knowledge. The Archer loosed violently on him his arrow of lightning, but the god set the keen lustre in his own daughter.

1.71.6

स्व आ यस्तुभ्यं॒ दम॒ आ वि॒भाति॒ नमो॑ वा॒ दाशा॑दुश॒तो अनु॒ द्यून् ।

वर्धो॑ अग्ने॒ वयो॑ अस्य द्वि॒बर्हा॒ यास॑द्रा॒या स॒रथं॒ यं जु॒नासि॑ ॥६॥

sve ā yaḥ tubhyam dame ā vi-bhāti namaḥ vā dāśāt uśataḥ anu dyūn

vardhaḥ agne vayaḥ asya dvi-barhāḥ yāsat rāyā sa-ratham yam junāsi

O Fire, increase, twofold in thy mass, the birth into knowledge of every one who is luminous to thy flame in thy own house or gives thee worship to thy desire day by day. Whomsoever thou makest to haste in one chariot with thee, travels with felicity of thy riches.

1.71.7

अ॒ग्निं विश्वा॑ अ॒भि पृक्ष॑: सचन्ते समु॒द्रं न स्र॒वतः॑ स॒प्त य॒ह्वीः ।

न जा॒मिभि॒र्वि चि॑किते॒ वयो॑ नो वि॒दा दे॒वेषु॒ प्रम॑तिं चिकि॒त्वान् ॥७॥

agnim viśvāḥ abhi pṛkṣaḥ sacante samudram na sravataḥ sapta yahvīḥ

na jāmibhiḥ vi cikite vayaḥ naḥ vidāḥ deveṣu pra-matim cikitvān

All satisfying things join themselves to the Fire as the seven mighty rivers join themselves to the ocean. Our birth to knowledge was not discovered by the companion lords of life: but thou knowest it; impart thy mind of wisdom to the gods.

1.71.8

आ यदि॒षे नृ॒पतिं॒ तेज॒ आन॒ट् छुचि॒ रेतो॒ निषि॑क्तं॒ द्यौर॒भीके॑ ।

अ॒ग्निः शर्ध॑मनव॒द्यं युवा॑नं स्वा॒ध्यं॑ जनयत्सू॒दय॑च्च ॥८॥

ā yat iṣe nṛ-patim tejaḥ ānaṭ śuci retaḥ ni-siktam dyauḥ abhīke

agniḥ śardham anavadyam yuvānam su-ādhyam janayat sūdayat ca

When flaming force comes to the King of men to give him strength, when Heaven is cast before him as a pure seed, the Fire begets faultless, right-thinking, young the gods of life and hastens their armies.

1.71.9

मनो॒ न योऽध्व॑नः स॒द्य एत्येकः॑ स॒त्रा सूरो॒ वस्व॑ ईशे ।

राजा॑ना मि॒त्रावरु॑णा सुपा॒णी गोषु॑ प्रि॒यम॒मृतं॒ रक्ष॑माणा ॥९॥

manaḥ na yaḥ adhvanaḥ sadyaḥ eti ekaḥ satrā sūraḥ vasvaḥ īśe

rājānā mitrāvaruṇā supāṇī iti su-pāṇī goṣu priyam amṛtam rakṣamāṇā

One who goes immediately on the paths and alone like the mind, the Sun, ever is master of the treasure. The kings Mitra and Varuna with their beautiful hands are guarding delight and immortality amid the rays.

1.71.10

मा नो॑ अग्ने स॒ख्या पित्र्या॑णि॒ प्र म॑र्षिष्ठा अ॒भि वि॒दुष्क॒विः सन् ।

नभो॒ न रू॒पं ज॑रि॒मा मि॑नाति पु॒रा तस्या॑ अ॒भिश॑स्ते॒रधी॑हि ॥१०॥

mā naḥ agne sakhyā pitryāṇi pra marṣiṣṭhāḥ abhi viduḥ kaviḥ san

nabhaḥ na rūpam jarimā mināti purā tasyāḥ abhi-śasteḥ adhi ihi

O Flame, violate not our ancestral comradeship; be still to us a knower and a seer. Age wastes the form of man like a cloud: know before that assault on our being.

1.72.1

नि काव्या॑ वे॒धस॒: शश्व॑तस्क॒र्हस्ते॒ दधा॑नो॒ नर्या॑ पु॒रूणि॑ ।

अ॒ग्निर्भु॑वद्रयि॒पती॑ रयी॒णां स॒त्रा च॑क्रा॒णो अ॒मृता॑नि॒ विश्वा॑ ॥१॥

ni kāvyā vedhasaḥ śaśvataḥ kaḥ haste dadhānaḥ naryā purūṇi

agniḥ bhuvat rayi-patiḥ rayīṇām satrā cakrāṇaḥ amṛtāni viśvā

He creates within us the poet-wisdoms of the eternal Creator and holds in his hand many strengths of the gods. The Fire becomes to us a master of riches, creating together all immortal things.

1.72.2

अ॒स्मे व॒त्सं परि॒ षन्तं॒ न वि॑न्दन्नि॒च्छन्तो॒ विश्वे॑ अ॒मृता॒ अमू॑राः ।

श्र॒म॒युवः॑ पद॒व्यो॑ धियं॒धास्त॒स्थुः प॒दे प॑र॒मे चार्व॒ग्नेः ॥२॥

asme iti vatsam pari santam na vindan icchantaḥ viśve amṛtāḥ amūrāḥ

śrama-yuvaḥ padavyaḥ dhiyam-dhāḥ tasthuḥ pade parame cāru agneḥ

All the limitlessly wise immortals desired and found the Child within us who is everywhere around us. The gods who put thought in us toiling and travelling in his footing-places stood in the supreme seat and they came to the delightful house of the Flame.

1.72.3

ति॒स्रो यद॑ग्ने श॒रद॒स्त्वामिच्छुचिं॑ घृ॒तेन॒ शुच॑यः सप॒र्यान् ।

नामा॑नि चिद्दधिरे य॒ज्ञिया॒न्यसू॑दयन्त त॒न्व१́: सुजा॑ताः ॥३॥

tisraḥ yat agne śaradaḥ tvām it śucim ghṛtena śucayaḥ saparyān

nāmāni cit dadhire yajñiyāni asūdayanta tanvaḥ su-jātāḥ

When for three years they had served thee, O Fire, with the clear-offering and were pure to thy purity, then they held the sacrificial names, they sped their bodies come to perfect birth.

1.72.4

आ रोद॑सी बृह॒ती वेवि॑दाना॒: प्र रु॒द्रिया॑ जभ्रिरे य॒ज्ञिया॑सः ।

वि॒दन्मर्तो॑ ने॒मधि॑ता चिकि॒त्वान॒ग्निं प॒दे प॑र॒मे त॑स्थि॒वांस॑म् ॥४॥

ā rodasī iti bṛhatī iti vevidānāḥ pra rudriyā jabhrire yajñiyāsaḥ

vidat martaḥ nema-dhitā cikitvān agnim pade parame tasthi-vāṃsam

The Masters of sacrifice discovered the vast Earth and Heaven and gathered to man the powers of the Violent One, and now the mortal knows and discovers by the founder of the hemisphere the Flame where he stands in the world of his supreme session.

1.72.5

सं॒जा॒ना॒ना उप॑ सीदन्नभि॒ज्ञु पत्नी॑वन्तो नम॒स्यं॑ नमस्यन् ।

रि॒रि॒क्वांस॑स्त॒न्व॑: कृण्वत॒ स्वाः सखा॒ सख्यु॑र्नि॒मिषि॒ रक्ष॑माणाः ॥५॥

sam-jānānāḥ upa sīdan abhi-jñu patnī-vantaḥ namasyam namasyanniti namasyan

ririkvāṃsaḥ tanvaḥ kṛṇvata svāḥ sakhā sakhyuḥ ni-miṣi rakṣamāṇāḥ

The gods and their wives altogether knew him and they came to him kneeling and bowed to the one who must be adored; and they exceeded themselves and made their own divine bodies and each friend was guarded in the gaze of his friend.

1.72.6

त्रिः स॒प्त यद्गुह्या॑नि॒ त्वे इत्प॒दावि॑द॒न्निहि॑ता य॒ज्ञिया॑सः ।

तेभी॑ रक्षन्ते अ॒मृतं॑ स॒जोषा॑: प॒शूञ्च॑ स्था॒तॄञ्च॒रथं॑ च पाहि ॥६॥

triḥ sapta yat guhyāni tve iti it padā avidan ni-hitā yajñiyāsaḥ

tebhiḥ rakṣante amṛtam sa-joṣāḥ paśūn ca sthātṝn caratham ca pāhi

The Masters of sacrifice found hidden in thee the thrice seven secret seats and with one common will in their hearts they guard by them the immortality. O Fire, keep the herds and all that stand and all that moves.

1.72.7

वि॒द्वाँ अ॑ग्ने व॒युना॑नि क्षिती॒नां व्या॑नु॒षक्छु॒रुधो॑ जी॒वसे॑ धाः ।

अ॒न्त॒र्वि॒द्वाँ अध्व॑नो देव॒याना॒नत॑न्द्रो दू॒तो अ॑भवो हवि॒र्वाट् ॥७॥

vidvān agne vayunāni kṣitīnām vi ānuṣak śurudhaḥ jīvase dhāḥ

antaḥ-vidvān adhvanaḥ deva-yānān atandraḥ dūtaḥ abhavaḥ haviḥ-vāṭ

O Fire, thou knowest all the revelations of knowledge of the dwellers upon earth; hold their strengths to uninterrupted continuity that they may live. And thou knowest the roads between, the paths of the gods, and thou art the sleepless messenger and the bearer of sacrifice.

1.72.8

स्वा॒ध्यो॑ दि॒व आ स॒प्त य॒ह्वी रा॒यो दुरो॒ व्यृ॑त॒ज्ञा अ॑जानन् ।

वि॒दद्गव्यं॑ स॒रमा॑ दृ॒ळ्हमू॒र्वं येना॒ नु कं॒ मानु॑षी॒ भोज॑ते॒ विट् ॥८॥

svu-ādhyaḥ divaḥ ā sapta yahvīḥ rāyaḥ duraḥ vi ṛta-jñāḥ ajānan

vidat gavyam saramā dṛḷham ūrvam yena nu kam mānuṣī bhojate viṭ

The seven right-thinking mighty Rivers of Heaven that know the Truth knew the doors of the felicitous treasure: Sarama discovered the strong fortified place, the largeness, the herded mass of the rays, and now the human creature enjoys by that wideness of the light.

1.72.9

आ ये विश्वा॑ स्वप॒त्यानि॑ त॒स्थुः कृ॑ण्वा॒नासो॑ अमृत॒त्वाय॑ गा॒तुम् ।

म॒ह्ना म॒हद्भि॑: पृथि॒वी वि त॑स्थे मा॒ता पु॒त्रैरदि॑ति॒र्धाय॑से॒ वेः ॥९॥

ā ye viśvā su-apatyāni tasthuḥ kṛṇvānāsaḥ amṛta-tvāya gātum

mahnā mahatbhiḥ pṛthivī vi tasthe mātā putraiḥ aditiḥ dhāyase veḥ

The great gods set their steps on all things that have fair issue, making our path to immortality. Earth stood wide in her greatness by the great Ones and the Mother Infinite came with her sons to uphold her.

1.72.10

अधि॒ श्रियं॒ नि द॑धु॒श्चारु॑मस्मिन्दि॒वो यद॒क्षी अ॒मृता॒ अकृ॑ण्वन् ।

अध॑ क्षरन्ति॒ सिन्ध॑वो॒ न सृ॒ष्टाः प्र नीची॑रग्ने॒ अरु॑षीरजानन् ॥१०॥

adhi śriyam ni dadhuḥ cārum asmin divaḥ yat akṣī iti amṛtāḥ akṛṇvan

adha kṣaranti sindhavaḥ na sṛṣṭāḥ pra nīcīḥ agne aruṣīḥ ajānan

The Immortals set in him splendour and beauty when they made the two eyes of heaven. The rivers of Truth are flowing, they have been let loose to their courses; their downward waters shone and knew, O Fire.

1.73.1

र॒यिर्न यः पि॑तृवि॒त्तो व॑यो॒धाः सु॒प्रणी॑तिश्चिकि॒तुषो॒ न शासु॑: ।

स्यो॒न॒शीरति॑थि॒र्न प्री॑णा॒नो होते॑व॒ सद्म॑ विध॒तो वि ता॑रीत् ॥१॥

rayiḥ na yaḥ pitṛ-vittaḥ vayaḥ-dhāḥ su-pranītiḥ cikituṣaḥ na śāsuḥ

syona-śīḥ atithiḥ na prīṇānaḥ hotā-iva sadma vidhataḥ vi tārīt

A divine Fire was the treasure discovered by our fathers: he sets on us our birth to knowledge and is as if the excellent leading of a wise teacher, and he is like a guest well pleased lying happy in our house, and he is like a priest come to our house of session and brings to safety those that do him worship.

1.73.2

दे॒वो न यः स॑वि॒ता स॒त्यम॑न्मा॒ क्रत्वा॑ नि॒पाति॑ वृ॒जना॑नि॒ विश्वा॑ ।

पु॒रु॒प्र॒श॒स्तो अ॒मति॒र्न स॒त्य आ॒त्मेव॒ शेवो॑ दिधि॒षाय्यो॑ भूत् ॥२॥

devaḥ na yaḥ savitā satya-manmā kratvā ni-pāti vṛjanāni viśvā

puru-praśastaḥ amatiḥ na satyaḥ ātmā-iva śevaḥ didhiṣāyyaḥ bhūt

He is like the god that creates, the Sun; his thought is truth and he guards all strengths by his will. He is a true force that is expressed by many and is to be pondered on like a blissful self.

1.73.3

दे॒वो न यः पृ॑थि॒वीं वि॒श्वधा॑या उप॒क्षेति॑ हि॒तमि॑त्रो॒ न राजा॑ ।

पु॒र॒:सदः॑ शर्म॒सदो॒ न वी॒रा अ॑नव॒द्या पति॑जुष्टेव॒ नारी॑ ॥३॥

devaḥ na yaḥ pṛthivīm viśva-dhāyāḥ upa-kṣeti hita-mitraḥ na rājā

puraḥ-sadaḥ śarma-sadaḥ na vīrāḥ anavadyā patijuṣṭā-iva nārī

He is as if the Godhead that foundeth all things lodging on the wide earth like a king with many loving friends. He is like a band of heroes marching in our front, marching to the house of bliss. He is like a woman faultless and beloved of her lord.

1.73.4

तं त्वा॒ नरो॒ दम॒ आ नित्य॑मि॒द्धमग्ने॒ सच॑न्त क्षि॒तिषु॑ ध्रु॒वासु॑ ।

अधि॑ द्यु॒म्नं नि द॑धु॒र्भूर्य॑स्मि॒न्भवा॑ वि॒श्वायु॑र्ध॒रुणो॑ रयी॒णाम् ॥४॥

tam tvā naraḥ dame ā nityam iddham agne sacanta kṣitiṣu dhruvāsu

adhi dyumnam ni dadhuḥ bhūri asmin bhava viśva-āyuḥ dharuṇaḥ rayīṇām

Therefore men cling to thee, O Fire, kindled eternal in the house, in the abiding worlds of thy habitation; for they have placed in thee a great light. Be our universal life; be the hold of our treasure.

1.73.5

वि पृक्षो॑ अग्ने म॒घवा॑नो अश्यु॒र्वि सू॒रयो॒ दद॑तो॒ विश्व॒मायु॑: ।

स॒नेम॒ वाजं॑ समि॒थेष्व॒र्यो भा॒गं दे॒वेषु॒ श्रव॑से॒ दधा॑नाः ॥५॥

vi pṛkṣaḥ agne magha-vānaḥ aśyuḥ vi sūrayaḥ dadataḥ viśvam āyuḥ

sanema vājam sam-itheṣu aryaḥ bhāgam deveṣu śravase dadhānāḥ

O Fire, let the masters of the wealth enjoy thy satisfying things and the illumined seers, the givers the universal life. Warriors in the clashes of the battle, let us conquer plenitude, let us set our portion in the gods for an inspired knowledge.

1.73.6

ऋ॒तस्य॒ हि धे॒नवो॑ वावशा॒नाः स्मदू॑ध्नीः पी॒पय॑न्त॒ द्युभ॑क्ताः ।

प॒रा॒वतः॑ सुम॒तिं भिक्ष॑माणा॒ वि सिन्ध॑वः स॒मया॑ सस्रु॒रद्रि॑म् ॥६॥

ṛtasya hi dhenavaḥ vāvaśānāḥ smat-ūdhnīḥ pīpayanta dyu-bhaktāḥ

parā-vataḥ su-matim bhikṣamāṇāḥ vi sindhavaḥ samayā sasruḥ adrim

The cows of the Truth, the cows enjoyed in heaven, have given us to drink lowing with happy udders; its rivers have flowed evenly over the mountain and claim right thinking as an alms from the Truth’s supreme region.

1.73.7

त्वे अ॑ग्ने सुम॒तिं भिक्ष॑माणा दि॒वि श्रवो॑ दधिरे य॒ज्ञिया॑सः ।

नक्ता॑ च च॒क्रुरु॒षसा॒ विरू॑पे कृ॒ष्णं च॒ वर्ण॑मरु॒णं च॒ सं धु॑: ॥७॥

tve agne su-matim bhikṣamāṇāḥ divi śravaḥ dadhire yajñiyāḥ

naktā ca cakruḥ uṣasā virūpe iti vi-rūpe kṛṣṇam ca varṇam aruṇam ca sam dhuriti dhuḥ

O Fire, praying in thee for right thinking as for an alms from on high, the masters of sacrifice set inspired knowledge in the heavens: they made night and day of two different forms and joined together the black and the rosy hue.

1.73.8

यान्रा॒ये मर्ता॒न्सुषू॑दो अग्ने॒ ते स्या॑म म॒घवा॑नो व॒यं च॑ ।

छा॒येव॒ विश्वं॒ भुव॑नं सिसक्ष्यापप्रि॒वान्रोद॑सी अ॒न्तरि॑क्षम् ॥८॥

yān rāye martān susūdaḥ agne te syāma magha-vānaḥ vayam ca

chāyā-iva viśvam bhuvanam sisakṣi āpapri-vān rodasī iti antarikṣam

The mortals whom thou makest to haste to felicity, make us of them, even us and the masters of riches. Fill earth and air and heaven; cling to the whole world like a shadow.

1.73.9

अर्व॑द्भिरग्ने॒ अर्व॑तो॒ नृभि॒र्नॄन्वी॒रैर्वी॒रान्व॑नुयामा॒ त्वोता॑: ।

ई॒शा॒नासः॑ पितृवि॒त्तस्य॑ रा॒यो वि सू॒रयः॑ श॒तहि॑मा नो अश्युः ॥९॥

arvatbhiḥ agne arvataḥ nṛbhiḥ nṝn vīraiḥ vīrān vanuyāma tvā-ūtāḥ

īśānāsaḥ pitṛ-vittasya rāyaḥ vi sūrayaḥ śata-himāḥ naḥ aśyuḥ

O Fire, give us thy protection; may we vanquish their war-horses by our war-horses, their strong men by our strong men, their heroes by our heroes: may the seers have the mastery of the riches discovered by our fathers and may they enjoy them living a hundred winters.

1.73.10

ए॒ता ते॑ अग्न उ॒चथा॑नि वेधो॒ जुष्टा॑नि सन्तु॒ मन॑से हृ॒दे च॑ ।

श॒केम॑ रा॒यः सु॒धुरो॒ यमं॒ तेऽधि॒ श्रवो॑ दे॒वभ॑क्तं॒ दधा॑नाः ॥१०॥

etā te agne ucathāni vedhaḥ juṣṭāni santu manase hṛde ca

śakema rāyaḥ su-dhuraḥ yamam te adhi śravaḥ deva-bhaktam dadhānāḥ

O creator, O Fire, may these words be pleasant to thy mind and to thy heart. Let our yoke be firm and our strength control the reins of thy opulence; let us hold the inspired knowledge that is enjoyed by the gods.
