Lexicon
of Rig Veda
arc, roar, sing; to shine, illume
The combination of two surviving meanings of the word is significant: to sing and to shine, despite the fact that for the noun ṛc dictionaries mention only the first meaning in its variations, verse, singing, etc. Sri Aurobindo constantly uses both meanings together, arc, to sing the hymn of light, arka, hymn of illumination, arkin, radiant singer, etc. So we can suppose that the related word ṛc also had the meaning of light and thus meant a verse of light, illuminating verse, etc.
