kutsa, Kutsa

kútsa āṅgirasá, the name of the character of many riks and the author of 1.94-98, 1.101-115, 9.97.45-58. It is possible that kutsa is derived from ku or and means “Crying (as baby).” Mentioned in Veda 36 times. Several times Kutsu is called a weapon: O Indra, by Vata’s steeds do bring Kutsu, deadly weapon against Shushna (1.175.4), O Indra, crush Dasya by Kutsa (4.16.12). Concerning Kutsa the following epithets are used: young, bright, hearing, courageous, Arjuneya, i.e. “belonging to the bright one”, (ārjuni + ya, where ārjuna = arjuna, bright, white – Indra’s epithet).

Rishi Kutsa, imprisoned in a narrowness (well), appealed for protection and growth to Indra (1.106.6). In the search for cows (6.31.3), Indra kills Shushna for Kutsa ( passim ), gives him a good hearing of the Truth (1.53.10), brings the Sun to the besieged, fighting Kutsa (4.30.4), increases him ( passim ), urges the seer in composing the hymn of light (6.26.3) and thereby makes him his charioter, driving with him in the same chariot (passim).
