of Rig Veda

śiphā, Shipha

The word occurs once in the Rigveda. Its meaning is not known. Most interpreters take the word after Sayana as the name of a certain river. Skandaswamy believes that this is the name of a tree whose branches grow downwards and give birth to new trees. Moniere Williams: flexible roots used for making whips. Nevertheless, none of these values leads to an unambiguous interpretation of the rik (1.104.3).
