Sukta 1

10.1.1

अग्रे॑ बृ॒हन्नु॒षसा॑मू॒र्ध्वो अ॑स्थान्निर्जग॒न्वांतम॑सो॒ ज्योति॒षागा॑त् ।

अ॒ग्निर्भा॒नुना॒ रुश॑ता॒ स्वंग॒ आ जा॒तो विश्वा॒ सद्मा॑न्यप्राः ॥

ágre bṛhán uṣásām ūrdhváḥ asthāt niḥ-jaganvā́n támasaḥ jyótiṣā ā́ agāt ǀ

agníḥ bhānúnā rúśatā su-áṅgaḥ ā́ jātáḥ víśvā sádmāni aprāḥ ǁ

High and vast the Fire stood in front of the dawns; issuing out of the darkness he came with the Light: Fire, a perfect body of brilliant lustre, filled out at his very birth all the worlds.

10.1.2

स जा॒तो गर्भो॑ असि॒ रोद॑स्यो॒रग्ने॒ चारु॒र्विभृ॑त॒ ओष॑धीषु ।

चि॒त्रः शिशुः॒ परि॒ तमां॑स्य॒क्तून्प्र मा॒तृभ्यो॒ अधि॒ कनि॑क्रदद्गाः ॥

sáḥ jātáḥ gárbhaḥ asi ródasyoḥ ágne cā́ruḥ ví-bhṛtaḥ óṣadhīṣu ǀ

citráḥ śíśuḥ pári támāṃsi aktū́n prá mātṛ́-bhyaḥ ádhi kánikradat gāḥ ǁ

Thou art the child born from earth and heaven, the child beautiful carried in the growths of earth; an infant many-hued, thou goest forth crying aloud from the mothers around the nights and the darknesses.

10.1.3

विष्णु॑रि॒त्था प॑र॒मम॑स्य वि॒द्वांजा॒तो बृ॒हन्न॒भि पा॑ति तृ॒तीयं॑ ।

आ॒सा यद॑स्य॒ पयो॒ अक्र॑त॒ स्वं सचे॑तसो अ॒भ्य॑र्चं॒त्यत्र॑ ॥

víṣṇuḥ itthā́ paramám asya vidvā́n jātáḥ bṛhán abhí pāti tṛtī́yam ǀ

āsā́ yát asya páyaḥ ákrata svám sá-cetasaḥ abhí arcanti átra ǁ

Vishnu knowing rightly the supreme plane of this Fire, born in his vastness, guards the third (plane); when in his mouth they have poured the milk (of the cow), conscious they shine here towards his own home.

10.1.4

अत॑ उ त्वा पितु॒भृतो॒ जनि॑त्रीरन्ना॒वृधं॒ प्रति॑ चरं॒त्यन्नैः॑ ।

ता ईं॒ प्रत्ये॑षि॒ पुन॑र॒न्यरू॑पा॒ असि॒ त्वं वि॒क्षु मानु॑षीषु॒ होता॑ ॥

átaḥ ūṃ␣íti tvā pitu-bhṛ́taḥ jánitrīḥ anna-vṛ́dham práti caranti ánnaiḥ ǀ

tā́ḥ īm práti eṣi púnaḥ anyá-rūpāḥ ási tvám vikṣú mā́nuṣīṣu hótā ǁ

Hence the mothers who bear that draught come with their food to thee, and thou growest by the food: to them the same, but other in their forms, thou comest (returnest) again, then art thou Priest of the call in human beings.

10.1.5

होता॑रं चि॒त्रर॑थमध्व॒रस्य॑ य॒ज्ञस्य॑यज्ञस्य के॒तुं रुशं॑तं ।

प्रत्य॑र्धिं दे॒वस्य॑देवस्य म॒ह्ना श्रि॒या त्व१่ग्निमति॑थिं॒ जना॑नां ॥

hótāram citrá-ratham adhvarásya yajñásya-yajñasya ketúm rúśantam ǀ

práti-ardhim devásya-devasya mahnā́ śriyā́ tvám agním átithim jánānām ǁ

The Priest of the call of the pilgrim-rite with his many-hued chariot, in the brilliant ray of intuition of sacrifice on sacrifice, Fire the guest of man who takes to himself the half of each god in might and glory.

10.1.6

स तु वस्त्रा॒ण्यध॒ पेश॑नानि॒ वसा॑नो अ॒ग्निर्नाभा॑ पृथि॒व्याः ।

अ॒रु॒षो जा॒तः प॒द इळा॑याः पु॒रोहि॑तो राजन्यक्षी॒ह दे॒वान् ॥

sáḥ tú vástrāṇi ádha péśanāni vásānaḥ agníḥ nā́bhā pṛthivyā́ḥ ǀ

aruṣáḥ jātáḥ padé íḷāyāḥ puráḥ-hitaḥ rājan yakṣi ihá devā́n ǁ

Putting on robes, putting on forms, Fire in the navel-centre of the earth is born a ruddy flame, in the seat of Revelation. O King, as the Priest set in front sacrifice to the gods.

10.1.7

आ हि द्यावा॑पृथि॒वी अ॑ग्न उ॒भे सदा॑ पु॒त्रो न मा॒तरा॑ त॒तंथ॑ ।

प्र या॒ह्यच्छो॑श॒तो य॑वि॒ष्ठाथा व॑ह सहस्ये॒ह दे॒वान् ॥

ā́ hí dyā́vāpṛthivī́␣íti agne ubhé␣íti sádā putráḥ ná mātárā tatántha ǀ

prá yāhi áccha uśatáḥ yaviṣṭha átha ā́ vaha sahasya ihá devā́n ǁ

Ever, O Fire, thou hast stretched out earth and heaven, as their son thou hast built up thy father and mother: O ever young, journey towards the gods who desire thee; then bring them to us, O forceful Flame!
