Aruṇa Vaitahavya

Sukta 91

10.91.1

सं जा॑गृ॒वद्भि॒र्जर॑माण इध्यते॒ दमे॒ दमू॑ना इ॒षय॑न्नि॒ळस्प॒दे ।

विश्व॑स्य॒ होता॑ ह॒विषो॒ वरे॑ण्यो वि॒भुर्वि॒भावा॑ सु॒षखा॑ सखीय॒ते ॥

sám jāgṛvát-bhiḥ járamāṇaḥ idhyate dáme dámūnāḥ iṣáyan iḷáḥ padé ǀ

víśvasya hótā havíṣaḥ váreṇyaḥ vi-bhúḥ vibhā́-vā su-sákhā sakhi-yaté ǁ

Adored by those who are wakeful, the dweller in the house is kindled in the house aspiring in the seat of revelation, the sacrificant of every offering, one Supreme1, wide of being, wide in light, a perfect friend to the man who seeks his friendship.

10.91.2

स द॑र्शत॒श्रीरति॑थिर्गृ॒हेगृ॑हे॒ वने॑वने शिश्रिये तक्व॒वीरि॑व ।

जनं॑जनं॒ जन्यो॒ नाति॑ मन्यते॒ विश॒ आ क्षे॑ति वि॒श्यो॒३่ विशं॑विशं ॥

sáḥ darśata-śrī́ḥ átithiḥ gṛhé-gṛhe váne-vane śiśriye takvavī́ḥ-iva ǀ

jánam-janam jányaḥ ná áti manyate víśaḥ ā́ kṣeti viśyáḥ víśam-viśam ǁ

In his visioned glory he lodges as the guest in every house, as a bird in forest and forest; he disdains not the peoples, universal he dwells in being and being, common to all he dwells in man and man.

10.91.3

सु॒दक्षो॒ दक्षैः॒ क्रतु॑नासि सु॒क्रतु॒रग्ने॑ क॒विः काव्ये॑नासि विश्व॒वित् ।

वसु॒र्वसू॑नां क्षयसि॒ त्वमेक॒ इद्द्यावा॑ च॒ यानि॑ पृथि॒वी च॒ पुष्य॑तः ॥

su-dákṣaḥ dákṣaḥ krátunā asi su-krátuḥ ágne kavíḥ kā́vyena asi viśva-vít ǀ

vásuḥ vásūnām kṣayasi tvám ékaḥ ít dyā́vā ca yā́ni pṛthivī́␣íti ca púṣyataḥ ǁ

Thou art discerning in thy judgments, strong of will in thy workings of will, O Fire, an omniscient seer in thy seer-wisdoms; a possessor of riches thou rulest sole over all the riches nourished by earth and by heaven.

10.91.4

प्र॒जा॒नन्न॑ग्ने॒ तव॒ योनि॑मृ॒त्विय॒मिळा॑यास्प॒दे घृ॒तवं॑त॒मास॑दः ।

आ ते॑ चिकित्र उ॒षसा॑मि॒वेत॑योऽरे॒पसः॒ सूर्य॑स्येव र॒श्मयः॑ ॥

pra-jānán agne táva yónim ṛtvíyam íḷāyāḥ padé ghṛtá-vantam ā́ asadaḥ ǀ

ā́ te cikitre uṣásām-iva étayaḥ arepásaḥ sū́ryasya-iva raśmáyaḥ ǁ

Thou hast known and reached thy luminous native seat where is the order of the Truth in the plane of revelation; free from stain of evil have come thy perceptions of knowledge like the white brilliances of the dawns2, like rays of the sun.

10.91.5

तव॒ श्रियो॑ व॒र्ष्य॑स्येव वि॒द्युत॑श्चि॒त्राश्चि॑कित्र उ॒षसां॒ न के॒तवः॑ ।

यदोष॑धीर॒भिसृ॑ष्टो॒ वना॑नि च॒ परि॑ स्व॒यं चि॑नु॒षे अन्न॑मा॒स्ये॑ ॥

táva śríyaḥ varṣyásya-iva vi-dyútaḥ citrā́ḥ cikitre uṣásām ná ketávaḥ ǀ

yát óṣadhīḥ abhí-sṛṣṭaḥ vánāni ca pári svayám cinuṣé ánnam āsyé ǁ

Thy glories like lightnings from a storm cloud break into light of knowledge brilliant like the rays of intuition of the dawns; when loosed on the growths of earths and woods of pleasaunce thou seekest out thyself the food for thy mouth3.

10.91.6

तमोष॑धीर्दधिरे॒ गर्भ॑मृ॒त्वियं॒ तमापो॑ अ॒ग्निं ज॑नयंत मा॒तरः॑ ।

तमित्स॑मा॒नं व॒निन॑श्च वी॒रुधो॒ऽ۟तर्व॑तीश्च॒ सुव॑ते च वि॒श्वहा॑ ॥

tám óṣadhīḥ dadhire gárbham ṛtvíyam tám ā́paḥ agním janayanta mātáraḥ ǀ

tám ít samānám vanínaḥ ca vīrúdhaḥ antáḥ-vatīḥ ca súvate ca viśváhā ǁ

Him the growths of earth held as a child in the womb in whom was the order of the Truth, the Waters become the mothers of that Fire who gave him birth; he is the common child with whom the pleasaunce-woods and the plants of earth are pregnant and they are delivered of him always.

10.91.7

वातो॑पधूत इषि॒तो वशाँ॒ अनु॑ तृ॒षु यदन्ना॒ वेवि॑षद्वि॒तिष्ठ॑से ।

आ ते॑ यतंते र॒थ्यो॒३่ यथा॒ पृथ॒क्छर्धां॑स्यग्ने अ॒जरा॑णि॒ धक्ष॑तः ॥

vā́ta-upadhūtaḥ iṣitáḥ váśān ánu tṛṣú yát ánnā véviṣat vi-tíṣṭhase ǀ

ā́ te yatante rathyáḥ yáthā pṛ́thak śárdhāṃsi agne ajárāṇi dhákṣataḥ ǁ

Missioned, fanned by the wind when swiftly entering into thy food thou spreadest wide after thy desire, thy ageless hosts, as thou becomest, toil like chariot-warriors far apart.

10.91.8

मे॒धा॒का॒रं वि॒दथ॑स्य प्र॒साध॑नम॒ग्निं होता॑रं परि॒भूत॑मं म॒तिं ।

तमिदर्भे॑ ह॒विष्या स॑मा॒नमित्तमिन्म॒हे वृ॑णते॒ नान्यं त्वत् ॥

medhā-kārám vidáthasya pra-sā́dhanam agním hótāram pari-bhū́tamam matím ǀ

tám ít árbhe havíṣi ā́ samānám ít tám ít mahé vṛṇate ná anyám tvát ǁ

Fire the creator of wisdom, the accomplisher of the discovery of knowledge, Fire the Priest of the call, the all-embracing thinker, him they choose universal in the little offering, him in the great, — not another, O Fire, than thou.

10.91.9

त्वामिदत्र॑ वृणते त्वा॒यवो॒ होता॑रमग्ने वि॒दथे॑षु वे॒धसः॑ ।

यद्दे॑व॒यंतो॒ दध॑ति॒ प्रयां॑सि ते ह॒विष्मं॑तो॒ मन॑वो वृ॒क्तब॑र्हिषः ॥

tvā́m ít átra vṛṇate tvā-yávaḥ hótāram agne vidátheṣu vedhásaḥ ǀ

yát deva-yántaḥ dádhati práyāṃsi te havíṣmantaḥ mánavaḥ vṛktá-barhiṣaḥ ǁ

The ordainers of the work, they who desire thee, choose thee as Priest of the call in their discoveries of knowledge when the seekers of the godhead hold thy delight4, human beings who have plucked for thee the sacred grass of thy seat and have brought their offerings.

10.91.10

तवा॑ग्ने हो॒त्रं तव॑ पो॒त्रमृ॒त्वियं॒ तव॑ ने॒ष्ट्रं त्वम॒ग्निदृ॑ताय॒तः ।

तव॑ प्रशा॒स्त्रं त्वम॑ध्वरीयसि ब्र॒ह्मा चासि॑ गृ॒हप॑तिश्च नो॒ दमे॑ ॥

táva agne hotrám táva potrám ṛtvíyam táva neṣṭrám tvám agnít ṛta-yatáḥ ǀ

táva pra-śāstrám tvám adhvari-yasi brahmā́ ca ási gṛhá-patiḥ ca naḥ dáme ǁ

O Fire, thine are the call and the offering, thine the purification and the order of the sacrifice, thine the lustration; thou art the fire-bringer for the seeker of the Truth. The annunciation is thine, thou becomest the pilgrim-rite5: thou art the Priest of the Word and the master of the house in our home.

10.91.11

यस्तुभ्य॑मग्ने अ॒मृता॑य॒ मर्त्यः॑ स॒मिधा॒ दाश॑दु॒त वा॑ ह॒विष्कृ॑ति ।

तस्य॒ होता॑ भवसि॒ यासि॑ दू॒त्य१่मुप॑ ब्रूषे॒ यज॑स्यध्वरी॒यसि॑ ॥

yáḥ túbhyam agne amṛ́tāya mártyaḥ sam-ídhā dā́śat utá vā havíḥ-kṛti ǀ

tásya hótā bhavasi yā́si dūtyám úpa brūṣe yájasi adhvari-yási ǁ

10.91.12

इ॒मा अ॑स्मै म॒तयो॒ वाचो॑ अ॒स्मदाँ ऋचो॒ गिरः॑ सुष्टु॒तयः॒ सम॑ग्मत ।

व॒सू॒यवो॒ वस॑वे जा॒तवे॑दसे वृ॒द्धासु॑ चि॒द्वर्ध॑नो॒ यासु॑ चा॒कन॑त् ॥

imā́ḥ asmai matáyaḥ vā́caḥ asmát ā́ ṛ́caḥ gíraḥ su-stutáyaḥ sám agmata ǀ

vasu-yávaḥ vásave jātá-vedase vṛddhā́su cit várdhanaḥ yā́su cākánat ǁ

For him these thoughts and utterances go forth from us, these words high and hymns of illumination and these high lauds and meet together seeking the riches for the master of riches, for the knower of all things born, and his desire is towards them.

10.91.13

इ॒मां प्र॒त्नाय॑ सुष्टु॒तिं नवी॑यसीं वो॒चेय॑मस्मा उश॒ते शृ॒णोतु॑ नः ।

भू॒या अंत॑रा हृ॒द्य॑स्य नि॒स्पृशे॑ जा॒येव॒ पत्य॑ उश॒ती सु॒वासाः॑ ॥

imā́m pratnā́ya su-stutím návīyasīm vocéyam asmai uśaté śṛṇótu naḥ ǀ

bhūyā́ḥ ántarā hṛdí asya ni-spṛ́śe jāyā́-iva pátye uśatī́ su-vā́sāḥ ǁ

I would speak to the ancient One a laud new to his desire, may he hear us; may it avail to touch his heart deep within like a wife beautifully robed for her lord’s desire.

10.91.14

यस्मि॒न्नश्वा॑स ऋष॒भास॑ उ॒क्षणो॑ व॒शा मे॒षा अ॑वसृ॒ष्टास॒ आहु॑ताः ।

की॒ला॒ल॒पे सोम॑पृष्ठाय वे॒धसे॑ हृ॒दा म॒तिं ज॑नये॒ चारु॑म॒ग्नये॑ ॥

yásmin áśvāsaḥ ṛṣabhā́saḥ ukṣáṇaḥ vaśā́ḥ meṣā́ḥ ava-sṛṣṭā́saḥ ā́-hutāḥ ǀ

kīlāla-pé sóma-pṛṣṭhāya vedháse hṛdā́ matím janaye cā́rum agnáye ǁ

Fire to whom are loosed and offered our horses, our bulls and oxen and heifers and our rams, to Fire the nectar-drinker who bears on his beak the Soma-wine, to the ordainer of things, I beget a thinking full of beauty from my heart.

10.91.15

अहा॑व्यग्ने ह॒विरा॒स्ये॑ ते स्रु॒ची॑व घृ॒तं च॒म्वी॑व॒ सोमः॑ ।

वा॒ज॒सनिं॑ र॒यिम॒स्मे सु॒वीरं॑ प्रश॒स्तं धे॑हि य॒शसं॑ बृ॒हंतं॑ ॥

áhāvi agne havíḥ āsyé te srucí-iva ghṛtám camví-iva sómaḥ ǀ

vāja-sánim rayím asmé␣íti su-vī́ram pra-śastám dhehi yaśásam bṛhántam ǁ

An oblation has been offered into thy mouth, O Fire, as if clarified butter in a ladle, as if Soma-wine in a bowl. Found in us the treasure in which are the heroes and which wins for us the plenitudes, — the treasure excellent7 and glorious and vast.
