sindhu, ocean

In the singular both words, samudra and sindhu, denominates the Ocean, whereas in plural – Rivers, Streams. This double using of these words is quite explicable because they are figures of the same reality, of the Consciousness-Being and both words are connected with Waters. The Waters are figure of Consciousness-Being as substance of all existence, the Rivers are figure of flowing, of moving, of mode of action of Consciousness-Being as vrata-s, Laws of all worlds – of physical mode of operating, of vital, of mental, of overmental, of supramental of mode of Mayas, the Bliss, of Sat-Chit-Tapas. All seven rivers flow through every of three regions of Manifestation, measured by three steps of Vishnu, through tree Earths, through mid-world, Antariksha, through three Heavens and inflow into the Ocean of this region, into lowest, into middle and into highest honeyed Ocean, that is figure that symbolizes not mode of action but endlessness of Consciousness-Being, while this Ocean has shores only only above and below it on the borders between regions of existence. Some riks deal with the upper Ocean: like lowing milch-cows running, Waters have quickly arrived the Ocean, 1.32.2; the thinkers saw the Ocean around, for them Surya become manifested, 1.146.4; this Ocean is good field, sukṣetrā, 1.122.6, here are all gods, 1.110.1; thou, O Agni, distributest immediately from the Ocean riches in the wave that thou outpourest on the giver, 1.27.6). The other riks deal with middle Ocean of mid-world of Overmind, where man’s consciousness being universal come to be in another immense reality full of dangers, where the seer, broken and pierced carried away in water have to be directed upwards, 1.116.24, 1.117.4 and the Ocean is discrived as foamy and furious and gods save Risho from it, rising him to Heaven: the Ashvins carried Bhujyu passing through from the desert (i.e. Earth) to another shore of not dry Ocean, 1.116.4; O Ashvins, him, carried away in ocean, you have carried out by well yoked chariot to peace, 1.117.15, 1.118.6, for vision of Svar, 1.112.5. The Dawn has shined and now let swift goddess of chariots blaze which were held in her arrivals like hearings of the Truth in the Ocean, 1.48.3. O Ashvins, your immortal chariot is going over Ocean (from Heaven toward Earth or contrarily), 1.30.18. The Maruts make mountains move over flowing Ocean, 1.19.7 1.19.8. O Ashvins, do bring the treasure from Ocean or from Heaven, 1.47.6. Some riks, 10.98.5, deal with lower Ocean, adharam samudram. Also there may be seven Oceans according to seven manifested worlds.
