āditya, Aditya

Sons of infinite Aditi, they are wide, deep, invincible, many-eyed, they see that is crooked and perfect, all, even highest, is close to kings, 2.27.3; standing gods, they uphold moving, protectors of all Existence, far-thinking, keeping divine might, possessing the Truth, 2.27.4; holding firmly the law workings (dhṛtavratāḥ), 2.29.1, all-rulers, 10.63.5, ever Kings, 2.27.1, By the Truth (ṛta) they stand, 10.85.1. Veda constantly names as Aditya Aryaman, Bhaga, Mitra, Varuna, Surya. Riks 2.27.1 and 9.114.3 enumerate seven Adityas, adding to mentioned Ansha and Daksha. Rick 10.72.8 speaks of the eight sons of Aditi, with seven of whom she joined the gods, and rejected the eighth Martanda.
