Epithet and description of main Vritra, Shushna: Indra killed Vritra, most Vritra, shoulderless, by the great stroke of thunderbolt; like trunk of tree cut in pieces by an axe, the Serpent lies low on the earth, 1.32.5; The feetless, the handless fought against Indra; Indra smote from above, Vritra lay cut in many places, 1.32.7; waters flow over prostrated Vritra who stood forcibly around them, now the Serpent became lying at their feet, 1.32.8; guarded by Serpent restrained waters stood out, when Indra, slayer of Vritra, has opened that closed hole of waters, 1.32.11; when Indra killed Vritra the Serpent by force, 1.51.4; even strong Heaven recoiled with fear from noise of this Serpent, when thy thunderbolt, O Indra, split off by bright might the head of Vritra, 1.52.10; When Indra’s lightning and Vritra fought, Indra’s bright might drove away the Serpent, 1.80.13.
