Lexicon
of Rig Veda
viśvagūrta, all-rising or approved by all
Indra’s epithet is found in Veda 3 times. Consists of viśva, all, gūrta, participle from gur, to lift. Since Indra’s task is to raise the existence of the lower hemisphere by inputing the Light from Above into it, such an interpretation of the word seems relevant and etymologically justified. Sri Aurobindo interprets the word in 1919 as the one who brings all things to expression. Monier-Williams: gūrta, approved, welcomed, viśvagūrta, approved, welcomed by all (epithet, hardly appropriate). Sayana, Wilson, Dutt, Saraswati: equal to every exploit; Griffith: approved by all men; Jamison, T. Ya. Elizarenkova, Kashyap: sung, praised, lauded by all; Ganguli: perfect pilgrim.
