sṛpradānu, giver of clarity

The exact meaning is unknown. The first part of the word is derivative of sṛ, sṛp, glide, slink, move gently or cautiously, oily; sarpis, ghi – so by analogy with ghṛta we supposed inner meaning of clarity (in 7 riks with the word sṛpr this meaning is appropriate). The second word, dānu, giving. So sṛpra-dānum analogous with ghṛtaduh is “giving clarity”. Sri Aurobindo: bringer of the flood of strength; Sayana, Wilson, Dutt, Sarasvati: the giver of continual gifts; Griffit, Kashyap: the constant giver; Oldenberg: the bestower of mighty rain; Jamison: possessing buttery drops.
