of Rig Veda

sapitva, joint advancement

The word occurs once in the Rigveda, its exact meaning is not known. In the word there is a prefix sa- meaning joint action, in union, in possession, etc., a suffix -tva- forming abstract nouns from the verb. The verb pi has meanings (1) to grow, swell; (2) to go, move. Often, the interpretations of derivatives of pitva (apa-pitva, a-pitva, abhi-pitva, ā-pitva, pra-pitva) are based on the prefix value. So, the word sapitva is interpreted as union, connection (Monière-Williams: Griffith, Jamison, Ganguly, T.Ya. Elizarenkova); or as achievement (Sri Aurobindo, Kashyap, Sayana, Wilson, Dutt).
